TL;DR: This paper proposes a framework that allows effective sensor data and metadata management based on real-time metadata creation and join processing over federated sensor networks and is currently deployed and used as the backbone of a concrete application in environmental science and engineering, the Swiss Experiment.
Abstract: As sensor networks become increasingly popular, heterogeneous sensor networks are being interconnected into federated sensor networks and provide huge volumes of sensor data to large user communities for a variety of applications. Effective metadata management plays a crucial role in processing and properly interpreting raw sensor measurement data, and needs to be performed in a collaborative fashion. Previous data management work has concentrated on metadata and data as two separate entities and has not provided specific support for joint real-time processing of metadata and sensor data. In this paper we propose a framework that allows effective sensor data and metadata management based on real-time metadata creation and join processing over federated sensor networks. The framework is established on three key mechanisms: (i) distributed metadata joins to allow streaming sensor data to be efficiently processed with their associated metadata, regardless of their location in the network, (ii) automated metadata generation to permit users to define monitoring conditions or operations for extracting and storing metadata from streaming sensor data, (iii) advanced metadata search utilizing various techniques specifically designed for sensor metadata querying and visualization. This framework is currently deployed and used as the backbone of a concrete application in environmental science and engineering, the Swiss Experiment, which runs a wide variety of measurements and experiments for environmental hazard forecasting and warning.

TL;DR: In this article, a plurality of states of metadata have been automatically matched and obtained for media content (e.g., for rendering by a media player) by selectively applying some or all of the matched metadata items without user intervention.
Abstract: Managing a plurality of states of metadata. Each of the states stores one or more items of metadata that have been automatically matched and obtained for media content (e.g., for rendering by a media player). The invention resolves the matched metadata by selectively applying some or all of the matched metadata items without user intervention (e.g., based on a user-specified threshold). In one embodiment, the invention selectively applies some or all of the matched metadata items based on a trustworthiness rating associated with the metadata match. The invention displays the remaining metadata items to the user for review and acceptance or rejection.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method and system to transmit multimedia data from a connected capture device is provided, which includes a capture device wirelessly connected to a secure storage device, which authenticates and communicates with a second communication device.
Abstract: A method and system to transmit multimedia data from a connected capture device is provided. The system includes a capture device wirelessly connected to a secure storage device, which authenticates and communicates with a second communication device. The connected capture device captures multimedia data and metadata and stores the multimedia data in an unprocessed format. The multimedia data and metadata are stored separately and are automatically transmitted to the secure storage device. The secure storage device is polled by the second communication device to retrieve the multimedia data and metadata matching criteria selected by a user of the second communication device. The second communication device receives the multimedia data and metadata and encodes the multimedia data and metadata based on a predefined format. Moreover, the second communication device infers additional metadata from the received multimedia data and metadata and encodes the additional metadata in the predefined format.

TL;DR: In this article, a method for accessing an impact of a portion of code, e.g., and update, on an application, includes obtaining metadata associated with the portion of software and comparing the metadata against a plurality of data structures associated with software applications.
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for efficiently scheduling downtimes associated with installing updates to software applications are described. According to one aspect of the present invention, a method for accessing an impact of a portion of code, e.g., and update, on an application, includes obtaining metadata associated with the portion of code and comparing the metadata against a plurality of data structures associated with the application. Comparing the metadata against the data structures includes determining whether a first data structure is identified in the metadata. The method also includes creating a first list when the first data structure is identified in the metadata. The first list identifies the first data structure as being arranged to be substantially directly affected by the portion of code.

TL;DR: In this paper, an actionable email documents module creates an email document having blocks that are mapped to fields of metadata, and each recipient adds data to the blocks so that the data becomes mapped to the fields of the metadata.
Abstract: A received reply email document enables some action to be effectuated using data included in the email document responsive to field identifiers associated with the data and corresponding to fields of metadata. The associated field identifiers that correspond to known fields of the metadata provide some expectation as to the semantic meaning and/or syntactic constraints of the data to which the field identifiers are associated. In a described implementation, an actionable email documents module creates an email document having blocks that are mapped to fields of metadata. The email document is transmitted to one or more recipients. Each recipient adds data to the blocks so that the data becomes mapped to the fields of the metadata. The recipients return a reply email document having the field-mapped data. Upon receipt, the module can effectuate some action using the field-mapped data responsive to the mappings.
