TL;DR: The metadata journal service as discussed by the authors records changes to an information system through client devices that send changes made to objects for recording in a server, and stores the objects along with their associated schema objects and operations in the metadata journal.
Abstract: The metadata journal service records changes to an information system through client devices that send changes made to objects for recording in a server. A client calls the server when a metadata event is raised. A metadata event may be raised when an object is modified, created, or deleted. The client sends the object identifier of object involved in the metadata event to the server, along with schema objects and operations associated with the object. The server generates a unique key for the metadata event, and stores the objects along with their associated schema objects and operations in the metadata journal. The journal may be searched and queried to provide metadata analysis, such as lineage or impact analysis for an object in the system.

TL;DR: In this paper, real-time metadata tracks recorded to media streams allow search and analysis operations in a variety of contexts and allow insertion of content specific advertising during appropriate portions of a media stream based on the content of the metadata tracks.
Abstract: Real-time metadata tracks recorded to media streams allow search and analysis operations in a variety of contexts. Search queries can be performed using information in real-time metadata tracks such as closed captioning, sub-title, statistical tracks, miscellaneous data tracks. Media streams can also be augmented with additional tracks. The metadata tracks not only allow efficient searching and indexing, but also allow insertion of content specific advertising during appropriate portions of a media stream based on the content of the metadata tracks.

TL;DR: The outcome of the process is a metadata schema that reuses as many elements as possible from existing specifications and standards (termed as an e‐government metadata application profile) that will describe e‐ government resources in digital collections.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to introduce a process for developing a metadata element set that will describe e‐government resources in digital collections. The outcome of the process is a metadata schema that reuses as many elements as possible from existing specifications and standards (termed as an e‐government metadata application profile). The use of e‐government metadata is to facilitate the electronic categorization and storage of governmental resources, as well as to enhance users' electronic interactions with the public sector.Design/methodology/approach – The paper extends an initial process presented in the context of the European Standardization Committee CEN/ISSS, proposing four steps for developing the application profile: determine the resources to be described by the metadata, identify the stakeholder groups who will use the metadata, determine the use of metadata for each stakeholder group, and specify the metadata elements corresponding to each use.Findings – The steps of the pr...

TL;DR: In this paper, a digital library's descriptive metadata for a large historical document collection encoded in MARC21 is mapped to a historical ontology using an out-of-the-box ontology, existing topic hierarchies on the World Wide Web and other resources.
Abstract: What are the possibilities of Semantic Web technologies for organizations which traditionally have lots of structured data, such as metadata, available? A library is such a particular organization. We mapped a digital library's descriptive (bibliographic) metadata for a large historical document collection encoded in MARC21 to a historical ontology using an out-of-the-box ontology, existing topic hierarchies on the World Wide Web and other resources. We also created and explored useful relations for such an ontology. We show that mapping the metadata to an ontology adds information and makes the existing information more easily accessible for users. The paper discusses various issues that arose during the mapping process. The result of mapping metadata to RDF/OWL is a populated ontology, ready to be deployed.

TL;DR: This paper studies uncertain features in the generation and application of metadata, and two types of uncertainties (incomplete and imprecise) are described based on semantic quantitative measurement method semantic relationship quantitative measurement based on possibilistic logic and probability statistic (SRQ-PP).
Abstract: Metadata are the information about and description of data. In Digital Earth, metadata become variant and heterogeneous with many uncertainties. This paper studies uncertain features in the generation and application of metadata, and two types of uncertainties (incomplete and imprecise) are described based on semantic quantitative measurement method semantic relationship quantitative measurement based on possibilistic logic and probability statistic (SRQ-PP). Moreover, in the case study, we apply two types of quantitative measurements based on SRQ-PP to describe incomplete (uncertain) knowledge and imprecise (vague) information separately in spatial data service retrieval, which in turn is helpful to identify additional potential data resources and provide a quantitative analysis of the results.
