TL;DR: Initial results from the application of the proposed metadata quality assessment certification process in the context of a specific LOR report an improvement of the quality of about 11,000 metadata records.
Abstract: Purpose – This paper aims to address the issue of poor quality of metadata records describing educational content in Learning Object Repositories (LORs) Through this, it aims to improve the discoverability of learning objects in such LORs through a structured process that supports metadata creation Design/methodology/approach – This paper presents a proposed metadata quality assessment certification process for LORs The process was designed as a generic approach that may be customized to fit various application domains Findings – Initial results from the application of the process in the context of a specific LOR report an improvement of the quality of about 11,000 metadata records More specifically, metadata completeness for all metadata elements used in the repository under examination was significantly improved from 30 percent to 85 percent Research limitations/implications – The main limitation of the findings is that they come from the application of the proposed process on a relatively small r

TL;DR: In this article, a data services module performs log storage operations in response to requests by storing data on one or more storage devices, and appending information pertaining to the requests to a separate metadata log.
Abstract: A data services module performs log storage operations in response to requests by storing data on one or more storage devices, and appending information pertaining to the requests to a separate metadata log. A log order of the metadata log may correspond to an order in which the requests were received, regardless of the order in which data of the requests are written to the storage devices. The requests may correspond to identifiers of a logical address space. The data services module implements an any-to-any translation layer configured to map identifiers of the logical address space to the stored data. The virtualization module may include a metadata management module configured to checkpoint the translation layer metadata by, inter alia, appending aggregate, checkpoint entries to the metadata log. The data services module may leverage the translation layer between the logical identifiers and underlying storage locations to efficiently implement logical manipulation operations.

TL;DR: Using a test set of MARC21 records describing 30,000 retrospectively digitized books, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) Library explored options for adding links, transforming into non-library specific LOD-friendly semantics, and deploying as RDF to maximize the utility of these records.
Abstract: Today researchers search for books in various ways. Once discovered, a variety of Web technologies can be used to link to related resources and/or associate context with a book. This environment creates an opportunity for libraries. The linked open data (LOD) model of the Web offers a potential foundation for innovative user services and the wider dissemination of bibliographic metadata. However, best practices for transforming library catalog records into LOD are still evolving. The practical utility on the Semantic Web of library metadata transformed from MARC remains unclear. Using a test set of MARC21 records describing 30,000 retrospectively digitized books, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) Library explored options for adding links, transforming into non-library specific LOD-friendly semantics, and deploying as RDF to maximize the utility of these records. This paper highlights lessons learned during this process, discusses findings to date, and suggests possible avenues for furt...

TL;DR: In this paper, a computer-implemented method of providing a track history before a database, comprising the steps of: providing in a storage memory, a record history of choice selectable records that each comprises metadata items applicable to identify a data set from a data superset stored in the database; providing a bank of transformers with different choice selected transformers; activating an application, which accepts the determined syntax, comprising posting the application specific metadata.
Abstract: A computer-implemented method of providing a track history before a database, comprising the steps of: providing in a storage memory, a track history of choice selectable records that each comprises metadata items applicable to identify a data set from a data superset stored in the database; providing a bank of transformers with different choice selectable transformers; wherein a choice selected transformer takes a selected record and transforms the metadata items of the record to application specific metadata according to a syntax determined by the transformer; and activating an application, which accepts the determined syntax, comprising posting the application specific metadata.
