TL;DR: In this paper, a conceptual model is generated for a document, wherein the conceptual model indicates one or more concepts that are recognized in the document, and by referencing this conceptual model, the document may be categorized to one of the categories of a categorization taxonomy.
Abstract: A method and system of generating metadata for a document so that the document may be identified by a subsequent search. A conceptual model is generated for the document, wherein the conceptual model indicates one or more concepts that are recognized in the document. A concept is defined by a plurality of features, each feature being associated with a feature weight. By referencing the conceptual model, one or more auto-attributes may be assigned to the document. Also, by referencing the conceptual model, the document may be categorized to one or more categories of a categorization taxonomy by assigning one or more auto-categories. The generated metadata, including the conceptual model, the one or more auto-attributes, and the one or more auto-categories, may be stored in a memory so that the subsequent search may identify the document by examining the generated metadata.

TL;DR: In this paper, the format agent fulfills the portions of the client's request regarding metadata attributes included in the associated format of the file system, and the requested metadata attribute data is then returned to the client.
Abstract: In a computer, a system and a method handle requests from a client for accessing metadata attributes from at least one file system having an associated format containing specific metadata attributes. A format agent manages the file system. A client's request is received at an interface and forwarded to a dispatcher. The dispatcher routes the request to the format agent. The format agent fulfills the portions of the client's request regarding metadata attributes included in the associated format of the file system. If the client's request contains a metadata attribute that is not part of the file system's associated format, the format agent accesses a metadata attribute store to retrieve the metadata attribute data needed to fulfill the request. The requested metadata attribute data is then returned to the client. Multiple instances of the metadata attribute data are accessible by the client, the instances selected and/or assigned by the client and/or the system.

TL;DR: A number of statistical characterizations of metadata samples drawn from a large corpus harvested through the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (PMH) are presented and interpret these findings in relation to general quality dimensions and metadata practices that occur at the local level.
Abstract: Introduction The federation of digital resources has become increasingly important in realizing the full potential of digital libraries. Federation is often achieved through the aggregation of descriptive metadata, therefore the decisions resource developers make for the creation, maintenance, and quality assurance of their metadata can have significant impacts on aggregators and service providers. Metadata may be of high quality within a local database or web site, but when it is taken out of this context, information may be lost or its integrity may be compromised. Maintaining consistency and fitness for purpose are also complicated when metadata are combined in a federated environment. A fuller understanding of the criteria for high quality, “shareable” metadata is crucial to the next step in the development of federated digital libraries. This study of metadata quality was conducted by the IMLS Digital Collections and Content (DCC) project team (http://imlsdcc.grainger.uiuc.edu/) using quantitative and qualitative analysis of metadata authoring practices of several projects funded through the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) National Leadership Grant (NLG) program. We present a number of statistical characterizations of metadata samples drawn from a large corpus harvested through the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (PMH) and interpret these findings in relation to general quality dimensions and metadata practices that occur at the local level. We discuss the impact of these kinds of quality on aggregation and suggest quality control and normalization processes that may improve search and discovery services at the aggregated level.

TL;DR: In this article metadata for mulimedia documents are classified in conformity with their nature, and the different kinds of metadata are brought into relation with the different purposes intended.
Abstract: In this article metadata for mulimedia documents are classified in conformity with their nature, and the different kinds of metadata are brought into relation with the different purposes intended. We describe how metadata may be organized in accordance with the ISO standards SGML, which facilitates the handling of structured documents, and DFR, which supports the storage of collections of documents. Finally, we outline the impact of our observations on future developments.
