TL;DR: Two key technologies for generating metadata about content - automatic categorization and information extraction are explained, and the applications that metadata makes possible, can transform an organization's reservoir of unstructured content into a well-organized repository of knowledge.
Abstract: There's content everywhere, but not the information you need. Content analysis can organize a pile of text into a richly accessible repository. This article explains two key technologies for generating metadata about content - automatic categorization and information extraction. These technologies, and the applications that metadata makes possible, can transform an organization's reservoir of unstructured content into a well-organized repository of knowledge. With metadata available, a company's search system can move beyond simple dialogs to richer means of access that work in more situations. Information visualization, for example, uses metadata and our innate visual abilities to improve access. Besides better access, metadata enables intelligent switching in the content flows of various organizational processes - for example, making it possible to automatically route the right information to the right person. A third class of metadata applications involves mining text to extract features for analysis using the statistical approaches typically applied to structured data. For example, if you turn the text fields in a survey into data, you can then analyze the text along with other data fields. All these metadata-powered applications can improve your company's use of its information resources.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a mechanism for associating metadata with network resources, and for locating and communicating with the network resources by providing a telephone number associated with a network resource.
Abstract: Mechanisms for associating metadata with network resources, and for locating and communicating with the network resources are disclosed. Owners of network resources define metadata that describes each network resource. The metadata includes a telephone number related to the network resource, its location, its language, its region or intended audience, and other descriptive information. The owners register the metadata in a registry. To locate a selected network resource, a client provides the telephone number to a resolver process. The resolver process provides to the client the network resource location corresponding to the telephone number. Accordingly, network resources can be located and communications with the resource can proceed merely by providing the telephone number associated with the network resource.

TL;DR: In this paper, a P2P network is used for the extraction of annotator descriptors and signatures that are used as indexes to specific video scenes and items of interest, which are then linked to annotator metadata, and then made available for download on a peer-to-peer network.
Abstract: Video programs (media) are analyzed, often using computerized image feature analysis methods. Annotator index descriptors or signatures that are indexes to specific video scenes and items of interest are determined, and these in turn serve as an index to annotator metadata (often third party metadata) associated with these video scenes. The annotator index descriptors and signatures, typically chosen to be free from copyright restrictions, are in turn linked to annotator metadata, and then made available for download on a P2P network. Media viewers can then use processor equipped video devices to select video scenes and areas of interest, determine the corresponding user index, and send this user index over the P2P network to search for index linked annotator metadata. This metadata is then sent back to the user video device over the P2P network. Thus video programs can be enriched with additional content without transmitting any copyrighted video data.

TL;DR: In this article, the design of metadata and queries includes the steps of first determining schema and metadata configurations of the data source servers, and the next step is enumerating available resources, and enumerating security and confidentiality requirements.
Abstract: Method, system, and program product for configuring and using a federated database management system. The design of the metadata and queries includes the steps of first determining schema and metadata configurations of the data source servers. The next step is enumerating available resources, and enumerating security and confidentiality requirements. These are used for calculating an optimal federated database management system design based on the schema and metadata, the enumerated available resources, and the enumerated security and confidentiality requirements; and designing an optimal federated database management system.
