TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose a context generator that utilizes contextual metadata to identify relationships between data and enable the proactive presentation of data relevant to a user's current context, and a unified activity feed that comprises correlated data groupings identified by correlation engines.
Abstract: A unified experience environment supports mechanisms that collect and utilize contextual metadata to associate information in accordance with its relevance to a user's current context. An ambient data collector obtains contextual and activity information coincident with a user's creation, editing or consumption of data and associates it with such data as contextual metadata. A context generator that utilizes contextual metadata to identify relationships between data and enable the proactive presentation of data relevant to a user's current context. Proactive presentation includes a context panel that is alternatively displayable and hideable in an application-independent manner and a unified activity feed that comprises correlated data groupings identified by correlation engines, including a universal, cross-application correlation engine and individual, application-specific correlation engines that exchange information through data correlation interfaces. The context panel and unified activity feed enable users to more efficiently access data and increase their interaction performance with a computing device.

TL;DR: In this article, a method, apparatus and program product for the invalidation of faulty metadata in a storage controller coupled to a host device is presented, without the controller being taken off-line from the host.
Abstract: Method, apparatus and program product are provided for the invalidation of faulty metadata in a storage controller coupled to a host device. Faulty metadata may include metadata which no longer matches the associated customer data tracks stored on a DASD or other storage device. When faulty metadata is detected, metadata tracks are selected to be invalidated. A command is received through a host interface, without the controller being taken off-line from the host, and the specified metadata tracks are invalidated. Subsequently, the invalidated metadata tracks are rebuilt. The disclosed method, apparatus and program product invalidate the faulty metadata with reduced impact on normal host/controller I/O operations.

TL;DR: The Alexandria Digital Library (ADL) Project has designed and implemented collection metadata for several purposes, and it is used for internal collection management, including mapping the object metadata attributes to the common search parameters of the system.
Abstract: Within a digital library, collections may range from an ad hoc set of objects that serve a temporary purpose to established library collections intended to persist through time. The objects in these collections vary widely, from library and data center holdings to pointers to real-world objects, such as geographic places, and the various metadata schemas that describe them. The key to integrated use of such a variety of collections in a digital library is collection metadata that represents the inherent and contextual characteristics of a collection. The Alexandria Digital Library (ADL) Project has designed and implemented collection metadata for several purposes: in XML form, the collection metadata "registers" the collection with the user interface client; in HTML form, it is used for user documentation; eventually, it will be used to describe the collection to network search agents; and it is used for internal collection management, including mapping the object metadata attributes to the common search parameters of the system.

TL;DR: In this article, the abstract update system enables search engines to provide the most recent abstract information for a document that matches a search query, even if this document may have been crawled after the metadata was indexed.
Abstract: A computer program product is provided as an abstract update system that improves Internet searching by automatically generating accurate and dynamic search abstracts. The abstract update system enables search engines to provide the most recent abstract information for a document that matches a search query, even if this document may have been crawled after the metadata was indexed. The dynamic abstracts are generated from the latest crawl metadata and link information stored in a link repository. As a result, the dynamic abstracts contain metadata based primarily on changes to a candidate page itself, and changes to what other sources provide about this candidate page. For example, even if a candidate page has not changed, new pages may point to it; some pages that used to point to the candidate page no longer do so; or existing pages that point to the candidate page change their annotations.

TL;DR: In this paper, a user search request is made and a subset of requested objects is defined that correspond to the user search, and a relevancy value is computed for each of the subsets of the requested objects using the fixed parameter metadata and/or the dynamic metadata.
Abstract: A method of displaying a plurality of digital objects includes storing the plurality of objects in a database, associating fixed parameter metadata and dynamic metadata with each of the digital objects, and classifying each of the digital objects in the database based on at least one of the fixed parameter metadata and the dynamic metadata. A user search request is then received and a subset of requested objects is defined that correspond to the user search request. A relevancy value is computed for each of the subset of requested objects using the fixed parameter metadata and/or the dynamic metadata. The objects are then displayed on a user display such that the most relevant objects are presented to the user and less relevant objects are spaced from the most relevant object. The display may be two- or three-dimensional and includes all relevant images in a single display.
