TL;DR: In this initial study, 36 polymers were synthesised to study the effect of a variation in the type and amount of four different functional monomers, methacrylic acid (MAA), acrylic acid (AA), hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and 2-vinylpyridine (2-VPy), for the imprinting of propranolol and morphine.

TL;DR: In this article, the polyion complexes were obtained by mixing the aqueous solution of poly(methacrylic acid) and that of poly[(N,N, N,N′, N′-tetramethyl-N-p-xylylene)ethylenediammonium dichloride] (1).
Abstract: The polyion complexes were obtained by mixing the aqueous solution of poly(methacrylic acid) and that of poly[(N,N,N′,N′-tetramethyl-N-p-xylylene)ethylenediammonium dichloride] (1). The forms of the polyion complex were observed as a homogeneous solution, a coacervate, or a precipitate under changing such conditions as the polyion concentration, pH, and the ionic strength. Especially, pH and the ionic strength affected the forms of the complex through the degree of dissociation of poly(methacrylic acid). The relations between these factors and the forms of the complex are shown as phase-diagrams. The correlation among these factors is discussed, too.

TL;DR: The results suggest that the amphoteric polymer brushes will be useful materials for biomedical applications by showing effective suppression of non-specific adsorption of bovine serum albumin and egg white lysozyme to the brush.

TL;DR: In this paper, a series of latex particles with various levels of crosslinking density in the PS and PA domain and varied composition of PS/PA LIPNs were obtained.
Abstract: Functional poly[styrene-co-(2-ethylhexyl acrylate)-co-(1,6-hexanediol diacrylate)]/poly[(methyl methacrylate)-co-(butyl acrylate)-co-(methacrylic acid)-co-(diacetone acrylamide)] (PS/PA) semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-LIPNs) containing ketone carboxyl groups were synthesized by two-stage emulsion polymerization, and characterized by Fourier transform infrared, transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering and DSC. A unique feature of the PS/PA semi-LIPNs is their ability to crosslink and form thermosetting full-IPN polymers through the reaction of ketone carboxyl and hydrazide in the course of film formation at ambient temperatures. Series of latex particles with various levels of crosslinking density in the PS and PA domain and varied composition of PS/PA LIPNs were obtained. The effects of the LIPN PS/PA composition and the level of crosslinking density in the PS and PA domain on film density, swell ratio, mechanical properties and contact angle with water were investigated. Maximum synergy effects obtained at around 50/50 (PS/PA) in terms of mechanical properties, density and contact angle with water indicate that the maximum degree of interpenetration is obtained at this composition. TL;DR: In this article, the authors used an anionic, water-soluble copolymer consisting of at least three monomers including acrylic acid, hydroxyalkylacrylate or hydrohexalkylmethacryl and styrenesulfonic acid.
Abstract: In producing microcapsules using the amino resin as a capsule wall in a system in which hydrophobic core material is dispersed or emulsified in an aqueous acidic solution containing an anionic colloidal substance, said anionic colloidal substance comprises an anionic, water-soluble copolymer consisting of at least three monomers including acrylic acid, hydroxyalkylacrylate or hydroxyalkylmethacrylate and styrenesulfonic acid. The process of the present invention provides a good emulsification against the variation of the emulsifying condition, a good stability of emulsion between the encapsulating reaction, an excellent stability against the variation of the encapsulating conditions and a superior capsule slurry. More desirable results may be obtained when an anionic, water-soluble copolymer which is obtained by copolymerizing one or more components selected from alkyl acrylate, methacrylic acid, alkyl methacrylate, acrylamide, methacrylamide, succinic ester of hydroxyalkyl acrylate, succinic ester of hydroxyalkyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate and acrylonitrile as fourth and further components in addition to the above-mentioned three components, is used.
