Abstract: Stability and rheology of aqueous α-Al2O3 suspensions with poly(methacrylic acid) and poly(acrylic acid) polyelectrolytes were studied as a function of pH, solids loading, and molecular weight. Past work has found polyelectrolyte-stabilized suspensions to be fairly pH independent at low (e.g., 20 vol%) solids loadings. However, we now show that the effective pH range to provide dispersed and fluid suspensions narrows as the concentration of solids increases as related to interparticle forces. At high solids levels, the presence of excess polymer in solution has detrimental effects on stability, which increases as the molecular weight increases. Finally, with knowledge of these concepts, highly concentrated fluid suspensions of 60 vol% Al2O3 (>85 wt%) with submicrometer-size particles have been processed. Higher consolidated densities and reduced sintering temperatures are attained when compared with more conventional processing techniques.

Abstract: Polymers of 98.9 to 95.5 weight percent of olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acids containing at least one activated double bond, 1 to about 3.5 weight percent of an alkyl acrylate ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid wherein the alkyl group contains 10 to 30 carbon atoms and 0.1 to less than 1 weight percent of a crosslinking monomer, are efficient thickeners in many applications where high ionic environments are encountered and may be used at lower concentrations to obtain equivalent or better results than prior art thickeners, and have been found to be particularly effective in print paste applications wherein there are reactive dyes, direct dyes and disperse dyes with high and varying ionic content. Further, in screen printing, improved print pastes are provided when they contain the novel polymers of this invention that have better rheology with less bounce back on release of printing pressure, and textile prints so made have better penetration. The resulting prints have an excellent combination of sharpness, lack of wicking, penetration, levelness and color yield.

Abstract: The direct preparation of amphiphilic graft copolymers from commercial poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is demonstrated. Here, direct initiation of the secondary fluorinated site of PVDF facilitates grafting of the hydrophilic comonomer. Amphiphilic comb copolymer derivatives of PVDF having poly(methacrylic acid) side chains (PVDF-g-PMAA) and poly(oxyethylene methacrylate) side chains (PVDF-g-POEM) are prepared using this method. Surface segregation of PVDF-g-POEM additives in PVDF is examined as a route to wettable, foul-resistant surfaces on PVDF filtration membranes. Because of surface segregation during the standard immersion precipitation process for membrane fabrication, a PVDF/5 wt % PVDF-g-POEM membrane, having a bulk POEM concentration of 3.4 wt %, exhibits a near-surface POEM concentration of 42 wt % as measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Abstract: A new and general design strategy is presented for amphiphilic block copolymers whose micellar aggregates can be dissociated by light. A diblock copolymer composed of hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and a hydrophobic polymethacrylate bearing pyrene pendant groups (PPy) was synthesized using ATRP. Upon UV light irradiation of polymer micellar solutions, the photosolvolysis of pyrene moieties results in their detachment from the polymer and converts the hydrophobic PPy block into hydrophilic poly(methacrylic acid). This effect leads to complete dissociation of polymer micelles.

Abstract: Polymer gels whose NMR and optical properties change when irradiated offer unique advantages for measuring radiation dose distributions. To date, all acrylic polymer gel dosimeters must be manufactured, stored and irradiated in hypoxic conditions which severely limits their use and stability. A new formulation of acrylic dosimeter gel has been developed that responds well in normal atmosphere and which we have named MAGIC (Methacrylic and Ascorbic acid in Gelatin Initiated by Copper). To produce dosimeter gels, an aqueous solution of gelatin, open to the atmosphere, is mixed with methacrylic acid, copper(II) ions, ascorbic acid and hydroquinone. It is believed that the copper(II) and ascorbic acid form a complex with oxygen which (with radiolysis of water) serves as a free radical source for the initiation of the polymerization of methacrylic acid. At room air the water proton spin relaxation rate R2 in MAGIC gels is proportional to absorbed dose though the precise relationship depends on the composition of the gel and the initiating complex. For example, in the range 0-30 Gy the slope of the response of R2 versus dose at 20 MHz was 0.300, 0.519 and 0.681 s(-1) Gy(-1), respectively, when the concentration of MAA was 3, 6 and 9%. The slopes increased to 0.310, 0.567 and 0.868 s(-1) Gy(-1) at 85 MHz. An important determinant of the sensitivity to detect small dose changes is shown to be the slope-to-intercept ratio of the dose-response curve. These varied from 0.08 to 0.17, comparable to hypoxic gels described earlier. MAGIC gels can be manufactured and used much more easily than the previous formulations and can be imaged by magnetic resonance imaging or optical scanning, and thus they will likely be of considerable interest to radiation physicists.
