TL;DR: The results from this work suggest that the elasticity of the gels would be slightly reduced in vivo as a consequence of the high ionic strength present.
Abstract: pH-responsive microgel dispersions contain cross-linked polymer particles that swell when the pH approaches the pKa of the ionic monomer incorporated within the particles. In recent work from our group, it was demonstrated that the mechanical properties of degenerated intervertebral discs (IVDs) could be restored to normal values by injection of pH-responsive microgel dispersions (Saunders, J. M.; Tong, T.; LeMaitre, C.; Freemont, A. J.; Saunders, B. R. Soft Matter 2007, 3, 486). These dispersions change from a fluid to a gel with increasing pH. The present work investigates the pH-dependent properties of dispersions of microgel particles containing MAA (methacrylic acid) and also the effects of added Ca2+. Two microgels are discussed: microgel A is poly(EA/MAA/AM) (EA and AM are ethyl acrylate and allyl methacrylate), and microgel B is poly(EA/MAA/BDDA) (butanediol diacrylate). The pH-dependent particle properties investigated include hydrodynamic diameters and electrophoretic mobilities. The critical c...

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of anionic polyelectrolytes on the electrokinetic and rheological properties of concentrated Si 3 N 4 suspensions was investigated experimentally.
Abstract: The effect of anionic polyelectrolytes on the electrokinetic and rheological properties of concentrated Si 3 N 4 suspensions was investigated experimentally. We found that polyelectrolyte adsorption and, thus, colloidal stability at pH>pH Si 3 N 4 iep is mainly governed by the surface charge density of the solid phase. Comparing anionic methacrylic acid comb copolymer modifications with grafted poly(ethylene oxide) chains (PMMA-PEO), with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) showed that the grafted PEO chains have a minor influence on the colloidal stability. The common viscosity minimum for all the anionic polyelectrolytes around pH 7 suggests that the suspensions are electrosterically stabilized. The polyacrylic backbone attains an extended conformation perpendicular to the surface. The effect of excess addition of polyelectrolyte was also discussed; we attribute the significant increase in suspension viscosity to the increased ionic strength caused by the release of associated counterions of the polymer functional groups.

TL;DR: In this article, a new system for the detection of triazine herbicide was prepared using the molecular imprinting approach, based on the competition between fluorescent-labeled and the unlabeled substance-analyte for the specific binding sites, that were produced in polymer by the imprinting of the template.
Abstract: A new system for the detection of triazine herbicide was prepared using the molecular imprinting approach. This method is based on the competition between fluorescent-labeled and the unlabeled substance-analyte for the specific binding sites, that were produced in polymer by the imprinting of the template. Polymer synthesis consists of radical polymerization of functional monomer (diethylaminoethyl methacrylate or methacrylic acid) and cross – linker (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) in the presence of triazine as a template. After grinding of the polymer block and splitting off the template molecules a suspension of the polymer was used for the herbicide-specific sensor system. Selective detection of triazine in the concentration range of 0.01-100 mM was achieved within 4 hours. This method seems to be applicable for the development of optical sensors, combining the high sensitivity and selectivity characteristic for biological receptors and the high stability of the synthetic molecularly imprint...
