Abstract: 823,753. Coated thermoplastic films. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E.I. June 5, 1957 [June 6, 1956], No. 17915/57. Addition to 810,722. Class 140. A coated film comprises a base film of a thermoplastic polymeric material having at least one surface coated with a sub-coating comprising a copolymer obtained from up to 50% by weight of vinylidene chloride, 40 to 90% by weight of an alkyl acrylate wherein the alkyl group contains at least two carbon atoms and 10 to 30% by weight of acrylonitrile, and a top coating comprising a copolymer obtained from 80 to 97 % by weight of vinylidene chloride and 3 to 20% by weight of at least one other polymerizable mono-olefinic monomer copolymerizable therewith. The base film, which may be oriented, may be of polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene, polystyrene, rubber hydrochloride, or polyvinyl chloride. The sub and top coatings which may be applied in the form of an aqueous dispersion or as a solution in an organic solvent, may also contain from 0.5 to 3.0% by weight of an unsaturated aliphatic acid preferably acrylic, methacrylic or itaconic acid, and also additives such as one or more pigments, dyes, delustrants or plasticizers. Specified alkyl acrylates are 2-ethyl hexyl and n-butyl acrylates. Specified monomers for use in the top coating are alkyl acrylates, e.g. methyl, ethyl, isobutyl, butyl, octyl and 2-ethyl hexyl acrylates, and methacrylates; phenyl, cyclohexyl, p - cyclohexylphenyl, methoxyethyl, chloroethyl, 2 - nitro - 2 - methylpropyl methacrylate, and the corresponding esters of acrylic acid; methyl and octyl alpha-chloroacrylate, methyl isopropenyl ketone, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, methyl vinyl ketone, vinyl chloride, acetate, propionate, chloroacetate, bromide and naphthalene, styrene, ethyl vinyl ether, N-vinyl phthalimide, succinamide, and carbazole, isopropenyl acetate, acrylamide, methacrylamide, or monoalkyl substitution products thereof, phenyl vinyl ketone, diethyl fumarate, diethyl maleate, methylene diethyl malonate, dichlorovinylidene fluoride, dimethyl, diethyl and dibutyl itaconate, vinyl pyridine, maleic anhydride, allyl glycidyl ether and other unsaturated aliphatic ethers of formula R-O-R 1 , where R is vinyl, allyl, 2-methylallyl, 2-chloroallyl or allyloxymethyl and R 1 is R as aforesaid or lower alkyl, 2-chloroethyl, 2- hydroxyethyl or epoxyphenyl as in U.S.A. Specification 2,160,943; compounds of formula where R may be hydrogen, halogen or a saturated aliphatic radical and X is Cl, Br, F, -CN, -C 6 H 5 , -COOH, -OC 6 H 5 , -CONH 2 , -CONHR 1 or -CONR 1 2 in which R 1 is alkyl. The base film may be pretreated with ozone at a temperature above 150‹ C. to improve adhesion of the coating. Specifications 718,422, 803,191 and 810,721 also are referred to.

Abstract: Over 20 new and easily prepared diamines were screened for the asymmetric Morita–Baylis–Hillman reaction. Chiral non-racemic 3-(N,N-dimethylamino)-1-methylpyrrolidine was found to promote efficiently the reaction of methyl vinyl ketone and substituted benzaldehydes. Enantiomeric excesses up to 73% were reached with electron-deficient benzaldehyde derivatives. After a simple deprotonation, one of these diamines was transformed into a chiral mixed aggregate for the enantioselective synthesis of (R)-1-o-tolylethanol with 76% ee.
