TL;DR: The California Urban Futures Model (or CUF Model) as mentioned in this paper is a new generation of metropolitan planning models designed to help planners, elected officials, and citizen groups create and compare alternative land-use policies.
Abstract: The California Urban Futures Model (or CUF Model) is the first of a new generation of metropolitan planning models designed to help planners, elected officials, and citizen groups create and compare alternative land-use policies. This article explains how the CUF Model works and then demonstrates its use in simulating realistic alternatives for regional and subregional growth policy/planning. Part One explains the design principles and logic of the CUF Model. Part Two presents CUF Model simulation results of three alternatives for growth policy/land-use planning alternatives for the San Franciso Bay and Sacramento areas. Part Three demonstrates the use of the CUF Model for evaluating alternative agricultural protection and zoning policies at the county, or sub-regional, level.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyze the impact of urbanization on the preservation zone of Mexico City and conclude that this peri-urban process shows, a marked environmental damage, lack of effectiveness of planning norms and of increasing living standards of the poor, all of which show an ineffective urban governance, that does not contribute to sustainability in the Preservation Zone and in the city in general.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present an empirical analysis of the relationship between transit-based job accessibility and employment outcomes for workers without automobiles in Boston, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.
Abstract: Focusing on low-skilled workers, I present an empirical analysis of the relationship between transit-based job accessibility and employment outcomes for workers without automobiles. The metropolitan areas examined are Boston, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Two essential components of the analysis are the calculation of refined job-access measures that take into account travel modes as well as the supply and demand of the labor market, and the incorporation of job-access measures into multinomial logit models. The results indicate that improved transit-based job accessibility significantly augments both the probability of being employed and the probability of working 30 hours or more per week for autoless workers in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Further, in these two areas, job accessibility has a greater effect for autoless workers than for auto-owning workers. Job accessibility plays a more significant role in employment outcomes for autoless workers in San Francisco and Los Angeles, highly auto-depend...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors consider a counterfactual case where the presence of a prominent research university provides no guarantee that an area's economic development potential is enhanced, and consider the other factors that might enhance the ability of an area to capitalize on the benefits that proximity to a research university may provide.
Abstract: Although there are many examples of the role that universities might play in fostering regional economic development, this article considers a counterfactual case. The presence of a prominent research university provides no guarantee that an area's economic development potential is enhanced. Using an innovation process model as a framework, the author studies the relationship between Johns Hopkins University and the Baltimore metropolitan area. This provides an opportunity to consider the other factors that might enhance the ability of an area to capitalize on the benefits that proximity to a research university may provide.

TL;DR: Land of Discontent as discussed by the authors examines the recent changes to the economic, social and cultural landscapes of regional and rural Australia, including the delivery of government services and the closure of bank branches in rural areas and the restructuring of rural industries.
Abstract: The last few years have seen the bush come to town. - It has been a long time since rural issues received such extensive coverage in Australia's metropolitan media. - The attention of the nation has been drawn to the severe impacts many political and business decisions have made on the social and economic fabric of regional and rural Australia. - Responses in the bush have seen traditional rural political allegiances being cast aside, as evidenced by the emergence of groups such as One Nation and strong local independents, and the demise of the Kennett Government in Victoria. - This political revolt has struck a chord in urban Australia and has possibly created a watershed within Australian public policy, with the mainstream political parties now seeking to distance themselves from the values of economic rationalism. - Land of Discontent examines the recent changes to the economic, social and cultural landscapes of regional and rural Australia. - Issues it considers include the delivery of government services and the closure of bank branches in rural areas and the restructuring of rural industries - and as a result, the communities those industries support.
