TL;DR: In this article, the authors consider the general problem of finding the minimum weight b-matching on arbitrary graphs and prove that, whenever the linear programing relaxation of the problem has no fractional solutions, then the cavity or belief propagation equations converge to the correct solution for synchronous and asynchronous updating.
Abstract: We consider the general problem of finding the minimum weight b-matching on arbitrary graphs. We prove that, whenever the linear programing relaxation of the problem has no fractional solutions, then the cavity or belief propagation equations converge to the correct solution both for synchronous and asynchronous updating.

TL;DR: An 8-approximation algorithm for the problem of finding a minimum weight subset feedback vertex set (or subset-fvs, in short) and its analysis is a new version of multicommodity flow, which is a hybrid of multic accommodity flow and multiterminal flow.
Abstract: We present an 8-approximation algorithm for the problem of finding a minimum weight subset feedback vertex set (or subset-fvs, in short). The input in this problem consists of an undirected graph G=(V,E) with vertex weights c(v) and a subset of vertices S called special vertices. A cycle is called interesting if it contains at least one special vertex. A subset of vertices is called a subset-fvs with respect to S if it intersects every interesting cycle. The goal is to find a minimum weight subset-fvs. The best previous algorithm for the general case provided only a logarithmic approximation factor. The minimum weight subset-fvs problem generalizes two NP-complete problems: the minimum weight feedback vertex set problem in undirected graphs and the minimum weight multiway vertex cut problem. The main tool that we use in our algorithm and its analysis is a new version of multicommodity flow, which we call relaxed multicommodity flow. Relaxed multicommodity flow is a hybrid of multicommodity flow and multiterminal flow.

TL;DR: In this article, the problem of optimum truss topology design based on the ground structure approach is considered, and it is shown that any minimum weight truss design (computed subject to equilibrium of forces and stress constraints with the same yield stresses for tension and compression) is subject to static equilibrium and a weight constraint.
Abstract: The problem of optimum truss topology design based on the ground structure approach is considered. It is known that any minimum weight truss design (computed subject to equilibrium of forces and stress constraints with the same yield stresses for tension and compression) is—up to a scaling—the same as a minimum compliance truss design (subject to static equilibrium and a weight constraint). This relation is generalized to the case when different properties of the bars for tension and for compression additionally are taken into account. This situation particularly covers the case when a structure is optimized which consists of rigid (heavy) elements for bars under compression, and of (light) elements which are hardly/not able to carry compression (e.g. ropes). Analogously to the case when tension and compression is handled equally, an equivalence is established and proved which relates minimum weight trusses to minimum compliance structures. It is shown how properties different for tension and compression pop up in a modified global stiffness matrix now depending on tension and compression. A numerical example is included which shows optimal truss designs for different scenarios, and which proves (once more) the big influence of bar properties (different for tension and for compression) on the optimal design.

TL;DR: In this article, the energy formulation of the force method is presented and analysis is performed using genetic algorithm and two simple examples are provided to show the accuracy of the approach and the genetic algorithm performed very well and designs with specified stress ratios were achieved with a good convergence rate.
Abstract: In the first part of this paper, the energy formulation of the force method is presented and analysis is performed using genetic algorithm. Two simple examples are provided to show the accuracy of the approach. In the second part, an efficient method is developed for designing structures with prescribed stress ratios for its members. The genetic algorithm performed very well and designs with specified stress ratios were achieved with a good convergence rate. A unit value of ci for all the members of a structure corresponds to the well known fully stressed design. In the third part, minimum weight design is formulated by the additional conditions being imposed on the design process. Again, genetic algorithm showed to be a powerful means for optimization.
