Abstract: The literature on reduced-order modeling, simulation, and analysis of the vibration of bladed disks found in gas-turbine engines is reviewed. Applications to system identification and design are also considered. In selectively surveying the literature, an emphasis is placed on key developments in the last decade that have enabled better prediction and understanding of the forced response of mistuned bladed disks, especially with respect to assessing and mitigating the harmful impact of mistuning on blade vibration, stress increases, and attendant high cycle fatigue. Important developments and emerging directions in this research area are highlighted.

Abstract: Reduced-order models have been reported in the literature that can be used to predict the harmonic response of mistuned bladed disks. It has been shown that in many cases they exhibit structural fidelity comparable to a finite element analysis of the full bladed disk system while offering a significant improvement in computational efficiency. In these models the blades and disk are treated as distinct substructures. This paper presents a new, simpler approach for developing reduced-order models in which the modes of the mistuned system are represented in terms of a subset of nominal system modes. It has the following attributes: the input requirements are relatively easy to generate; it accurately predicts mistuning effects in regions where frequency veering occurs; as the number of degrees-of-freedom increases it converges to the exact solution; it accurately predicts stresses as well as displacements; and it accurately models the deformation and stresses at the blades' bases.

Abstract: We consider a decentralized bidirectional control of a platoon of N identical vehicles moving in a straight line. The control objective is for each vehicle to maintain a constant velocity and inter-vehicular separation using only the local information from itself and its two nearest neighbors. Each vehicle is modeled as a double integrator. To aid the analysis, we use continuous approximation to derive a partial differential equation (PDE) approximation of the discrete platoon dynamics. The PDE model is used to explain the progressive loss of closed-loop stability with increasing number of vehicles, and to devise ways to combat this loss of stability. If every vehicle uses the same controller, we show that the least stable closed-loop eigenvalue approaches zero as O(1/N2) in the limit of a large number (N) of vehicles. We then show how to ameliorate this loss of stability by small amounts of "mistuning", i.e., changing the controller gains from their nominal values. We prove that with arbitrary small amounts of mistuning, the asymptotic behavior of the least stable closed loop eigenvalue can be improved to O(1/N). All the conclusions drawn from analysis of the PDE model are corroborated via numerical calculations of the state-space platoon model.

Abstract: When a low harmonic in a harmonic complex tone is mistuned from its harmonic value by a sufficient amount it is heard as a separate tone, standing out from the complex as a whole. This experiment estimated the degree of mistuning required for this phenomenon to occur, for complex tones with 10 or 12 equal‐amplitude components (60 dB SPL per component). On each trial the subject was presented with a complex tone which either had all its partials at harmonic frequencies or had one partial mistuned from its harmonic frequency. The subject had to indicate whether he heard a single complex tone with one pitch or a complex tone plus a pure tone which did not ‘‘belong’’ to the complex. An adaptive procedure was used to track the degree of mistuning required to achieve a d’ value of 1. Threshold was determined for each ot the first six harmonics of each complex tone. In one set of conditions stimulus duration was held constant at 410 ms, and the fundamental frequency was either 100, 200, or 400 Hz. For most conditions the thresholds fell between 1% and 3% of the harmonic frequency, depending on the subject. However, thresholds tended to be greater for the first two harmonics of the 100‐Hz fundamental and, for some subjects, thresholds increased for the fifth and sixth harmonics. In a second set of conditions fundamental frequency was held constant at 200 Hz, and the duration was either 50, 110, 410, or 1610 ms. Thresholds increased by a factor of 3–5 as duration was decreased from 1610 ms to 50 ms. The results are discussed in terms of a hypothetical harmonic sieve and mechanisms for the formation of perceptual streams.
