Abstract: Mobile communications are increasingly contributing to global energy consumption. In this article, a holistic approach for energy efficient mobile radio networks is presented. The matter of having appropriate metrics and evaluation methods that allow assessing the energy efficiency of the entire system is discussed. The mutual supplementary saving concepts comprise component, link and network levels. At the component level the power amplifier complemented by a transceiver and a digital platform supporting advanced power management are key to efficient radio implementations. Discontinuous transmission by base stations, where hardware components are switched off, facilitate energy efficient operation at the link level. At the network level, the potential for reducing energy consumption is in the layout of networks and their management, that take into account slowly changing daily load patterns, as well as highly dynamic traffic fluctuations. Moreover, research has to analyze new disruptive architectural approaches, including multi-hop transmission, ad-hoc meshed networks, terminal-to-terminal communications, and cooperative multipoint architectures.

Abstract: Mobile edge computing has risen as a promising technology for augmenting the computational capabilities of mobile devices Meanwhile, in-network caching has become a natural trend of the solution of handling exponentially increasing Internet traffic The important issues in these two networking paradigms are computation offloading and content caching strategies, respectively In order to jointly tackle these issues in wireless cellular networks with mobile edge computing, we formulate the computation offloading decision, resource allocation and content caching strategy as an optimization problem, considering the total revenue of the network Furthermore, we transform the original problem into a convex problem and then decompose it in order to solve it in a distributed and efficient way Finally, with recent advances in distributed convex optimization, we develop an alternating direction method of multipliers-based algorithm to solve the optimization problem The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is demonstrated by simulation results with different system parameters

Abstract: A method is described for analyzing the mean effective gain (MEG) of antennas moving in a mobile communication environment. The MEG characteristics of a mobile antenna are determined by the mutual relation between the antenna patterns and the statistical distribution of incident waves in an environment. To analyze this relation theoretically, a general expression for the MEG using a statistical model of incident waves is derived, and a novel statistical model, whose distribution is uniform in azimuth and Gaussian in elevation, is proposed. The validity of the statistical model is confirmed through 900-MHz-band measurements carried out in a Tokyo urban area, and the empirical parameters for the statistical distribution are described. The MEG characteristics of a half-wavelength dipole antenna are investigated using the proposed method, and it is shown that the theoretical curves calculated using the empirical parameters are in excellent agreement with experimental results. This analysis is extremely applicable for evaluating the MEG characteristics of arbitrary mobile antennas in various mobile communication environments. >

Abstract: Technological advances in sensing, computation, storage, and communications will turn the near-ubiquitous mobile phone into a global mobile sensing device. People-centric sensing will help drive this trend by enabling a different way to sense, learn, visualize, and share information about ourselves, friends, communities, the way we live, and the world we live in. It juxtaposes the traditional view of mesh sensor networks with one in which people, carrying mobile devices, enable opportunistic sensing coverage. In the MetroSense Project's vision of people-centric sensing, users are the key architectural system component, enabling a host of new application areas such as personal, public, and social sensing.

Abstract: We present a framework for agreements in pervasive environments called the Universal Pervasive Transaction Framework (UPTF) for parties transacting in wireless insecure environments using mobile devices. We discuss one type of such agreement with commercial interest, namely mobile payments from a payer to a payee. We have implemented two complete systems for purchasing and payment with mobile devices utilizing UPTF. The first introduces a special purpose, new mobile device called the Universal Pervasive Transaction Device (UPTD) and the second utilizes J2ME-capable mobile phones.
