TL;DR: In this article, an agent support framework used in a mobile communication device is described, which provides a set of commonly used features that may be used by various client applications, such as monitoring device status, performing problem diagnosis, and obtaining configuration information from the mobile electronic device.
Abstract: Herein described is an agent support framework used in a mobile communication device. The agent support framework provides a set of commonly used features that may be used by various client applications. The client applications may comprise one or more diagnostic/configuration agents that are used in monitoring device status, performing problem diagnosis, and obtaining configuration information from the mobile electronic device. Should a firmware or file system update be required, one or more update agents may be used to download one or more data files. The set of commonly used features provides shared resources to the various client applications. New client applications may be easily designed based on the set of commonly used features. The integration of new agents and/or clients to the agent support framework is facilitated by the ability of the agent support framework to provide shared resources when necessary.

TL;DR: In this paper, a memory module for storing data in machine readable format for retrieval and execution by a central processing unit and an operating system operable to execute an intrusion detection application stored in the memory module is provided.
Abstract: A mobile device operable in a mobile telecommunications network comprising a memory module for storing data in machine readable format for retrieval and execution by a central processing unit and an operating system operable to execute an intrusion detection application stored in the memory module is provided. A node of a network for managing an intrusion detection system comprising a memory module for storing data in machine readable format for retrieval and execution by a central processing unit and an operating system comprising a network stack comprising a protocol driver and a media access control driver and operable to execute an intrusion protection system management application, the management application operable to receive text-file input defining a network-exploit rule and convert the text-file input into a signature file comprising machine-readable logic representative of an exploit-signature, the node operable to transmit the signature file to a mobile device over a radio frequency link is provided.

TL;DR: This paper presents a prototype of a mobile application for UMTS called [email protected] (Local Location Assistant) and implements a tourist guide for users in the city of Vienna and discusses user interaction and interface design, design process, and technical solutions used to implement the application.
Abstract: Modern lifestyle corresponds with high personal mobility. People want to work or use leisure-time applications while on the road. Modern mobile communications systems allow to meet these requirements for the first time. Advanced new features like user positioning allow sophisticated applications that are not possible in the fixed Internet or traditional cellular networks. Still, application development for the Mobile Internet is a complex task. Users have special demands because of the mobile environment. Stringent technical constraints are imposed by mobile networks and mobile devices. In this paper we present a prototype of a mobile application for UMTS. It is called [email protected] (Local Location Assistant) and implements a tourist guide for users in the city of Vienna. We discuss user interaction and interface design, design process, and technical solutions used to implement the application. Because of the initial lack of powerful PDAs, currently a laptop is used as terminal.

TL;DR: In this article, a far-end modem is part of a modem-pool located within the Mobile Telecommunications Switching Office of the cellular network, and it detects the existence of a data connection to a far end modem and switches to the appropriate mode.
Abstract: A mobile phone includes a modem, hereinafter referred to as a cellular radio modem. This cellular radio modem supports two modes of operation--an analog mode, where the cellular radio modem provides an analog signal for transmission; and a digital mode, where the cellular radio modem provides a digital bit stream for transmission. During operation, i.e., the existence of a data connection to a far-end modem, the cellular radio modem is alerted by the cellular network to switch to the appropriate mode--analog or digital. The cellular radio modem then switches and continues transmission in the new mode. In this embodiment, the far-end modem is part of a modem-pool located within the Mobile Telecommunications Switching Office of the cellular network. The far-end modem automatically detects this switch by the cellular radio modem and itself switches to the appropriate mode. This allows a mobile data user to transparently move between the analog mode and the digital mode without disconnecting a preexisting data connection.
