TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that even small off-diagonal damping values can be significant if the structure has closely spaced natural frequencies, and closed-form analytical expressions were derived for the modal properties and harmonic and stochastic response of structures with closely-spaced natural frequencies.
Abstract: The equations of motion of a structure in undamped modal coordinates may have non-zero off-diagonal terms in the damping matrix. Although these terms are commonly neglected, studies have shown that they may have a significant influence on the response to dynamic loads. In this paper, two independent criteria are developed to determine when these damping terms will affect the structure's modal properties and response. It is found that even small off-diagonal damping values can be significant if the structure has closely spaced natural frequencies. To quantify and understand the influence of these damping terms, closed-form analytical expressions are derived for the modal properties and harmonic and stochastic response of structures with closely spaced natural frequencies. One conclusion is that off-diagonal damping terms will decrease a modal damping ratio for each pair of closely spaced modes. This is significant, since a response analysis performed by neglecting these off-diagonal terms will underestimate the true response.

TL;DR: In this article, a set of undamped critical speed mode shapes calculated from the average horizontal and vertical bearing stiffness is used to transform the equations of motion into a set coupled modal equations, coupled by the generalized bearing coefficients and the gyroscopic moments.
Abstract: The generalized dynamic equations of motion have been obtained by the direct stiffness method for multimass flexible rotor bearing systems including the effects of gyroscopic moments, disk skew, and rotor acceleration. A set of undamped critical speed mode shapes calculated from the average horizontal and vertical bearing stiffness is used to transform the equations of motion into a set of coupled modal equations of motion. The modal equations are coupled by the generalized bearing coefficients and the gyroscopic moments. An analysis using only undamped critical speeds or decoupled modal analysis assuming proportional damping may lead to erroneous results. This paper presents a rapid method of calculating rotor resonance speeds with their corresponding amplification factors, stability and unbalance response of turborotors. Examples of the application of this modal approach are presented and results are compared to those of other methods such as matrix transfer analysis.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors demonstrate the effectiveness of a nondestructive diagnostic technique used to determine the location and size of delamination in laminated coatings of wind turbine blades.
Abstract: This paper demonstrates the effectiveness of a nondestructive diagnostic technique used to determine the location and size of delamination in laminated coatings of wind turbine blades. This is realized based on results of numerical and experimental investigations obtained by the use of the finite element method (FEM) and laser scanning vibrometry (LSV). The proposed method is based on the one-dimensional continuous wavelet transform of vibration parameters of a wind turbine blade. The investigations were conducted for a 1 : 10 scaled-down blade of a 36 m rotor wind turbine. Glass fibres and epoxy resin were used as laminate components. For numerical studies, a simple delamination model was proposed. The results obtained by the authors were used to determine the optimal set of parameters of the continuous wavelet transform. The application of high-quality LSV for experimental measurements allowed determining the optimal conditions of measuring procedures. At the same time the capabilities and limitations, resulting from the nature of the measurement method, were identified. In order to maximize the effectiveness of the detection method, preliminary signal processing was performed. Beside base wavelets also different waveform families were tested. The results obtained by the authors showed that it is possible to identify and localize even relatively small damage.
