TL;DR: In this article, the authors established the theoretical background of mode coupling in step index few mode fibers followed by a numerical analysis of a limited case of four spatial modes and suggested about reasonable selection of normalized frequency value of fiber by including the effects of group delay dispersion of coupling modes.
Abstract: Mode multiplexed transmission is a novel idea to increase the transmission capacity in a multiplicative order for optical fiber communication links. Mode coupling is one of the fundamental issues in this mode of transmission which limits the length of the span. In this paper we established the theoretical background of mode coupling in step index few mode fibers followed by a numerical analysis of a limited case of four spatial modes. We observed the relationship of coupling coefficients with physical parameters of optical fiber and impact of difference of propagation constants of coupling modes. In the end we suggested about reasonable selection of normalized frequency value of fiber by including the effects of group delay dispersion of coupling modes. TL;DR: In this article, a modification of Gaussian approximation is proposed to describe mode field distribution in fiber core by Laguerre-Gaussian functions and by modified Bessel function of the second kind in the fiber cladding.
Abstract: This work presents modification of Gaussian approximation. Here we propose to describe mode field distribution in fiber core by Laguerre-Gaussian functions and by modified Bessel function of the second kind in the fiber cladding. Results of error estimation are presented for equivalent mode field radius calculation occurring due to mode field distribution approximation by Laguerre-Gaussian functions in the cladding region. According to obtained results the error is negligible for low-order modes. However it increases up to 1% and even more for modes with (m + l) > 4, where m is radial and l is azimuthal mode order.

TL;DR: This presentation explains how the Serial Digital Interface (SDI) technology has changed the way that video is transported in the broadcast and professional environment and some of the challenges it has faced have been addressed.
Abstract: INTRODUCTION For the last 25 years video has been transported in the broadcast and professional environment using the Serial Digital Interface (SDI) over coaxial cable. The success of this technology has been phenomenal, with data rates up to 3 Gb/s transported for many tens, or even hundreds, of metres over cable that looks no different from that designed for 4.2 MHz of NTSC. But there are always requirements for longer runs, and digital signals over cable have a very well defined quality cutoff point with cable length.

TL;DR: It is found that the perpendicular component has a greater impact on pulse than that of the parallel component in mean, and the statistical properties of them were also analyzed.
Abstract: We measured the second-order polarization mode dispersion (SOPMD) in a 75 km single mode fiber with the Poincare sphere method. The parallel component and perpendicular component (also called the depolarization component) of SOPMD were analyzed, and the statistical properties of them were also analyzed. According to these we found that the perpendicular component has a greater impact on pulse than that of the parallel component in mean.

TL;DR: In this article, a frequency-variable light source and a method of producing the light source are provided, which includes an resonant optical cavity 12, an optical gain medium 18, optical mode filter 20 and a mode frequency tuner 22.
Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve frequency tuning without accompanying mode hopping. SOLUTION: A frequency-variable light source and a method of producing the light source are provided. The frequency-variable light source includes an resonant optical cavity 12, an optical gain medium 18, an optical mode filter 20 and a mode frequency tuner 22. The resonant optical cavity supports oscillation of the light, in at least one longitudinal mode having a corresponding mode frequency. The optical gain medium is disposed in the cavity and amplifies light. The optical mode filter is arranged to intercept the light oscillating in the cavity and has an optical transmission pass-band with a tunable center frequency. The mode frequency tuner is arranged to intercept the oscillating light and changes a mode frequency of the longitudinal mode of the cavity to enable tuning. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
