TL;DR: A fiber-based tunable mode rotator is proposed and demonstrated by using the few mode-polarization maintaining fiber to show that another intended LP11 (LP21) mode with a certain orientation can be controllably generated at the FM-PMF output.
Abstract: In this paper, a fiber-based tunable mode rotator is proposed and demonstrated by using the few mode-polarization maintaining fiber (FM-PMF). The mode birefringence in the FM-PMF causes phase difference between two orthogonal degenerate modes. With rotating the FM-PMF segment and getting a variation of aligning angle between the injected LP11 (LP21) mode axis and FM-PMF axis, another intended LP11 (LP21) mode with a certain orientation can be controllably generated at the FM-PMF output.

TL;DR: A generalized field-propagating model for active optical fibers that takes into account mode beating and mode coupling through the amplifying medium and predicts much lower differential modal gain than that predicted by a classical intensity model is developed.
Abstract: We developed a generalized field-propagating model for active optical fibers that takes into account mode beating and mode coupling through the amplifying medium. We applied the model to the particular case of a few-mode erbium doped fiber amplifier. Results from the model predict that mode coupling mediated by the amplifying medium is very low. Furthermore, we applied the model to a typical amplifier configuration. In this particular configuration, the new model predicts much lower differential modal gain than that predicted by a classical intensity model.

TL;DR: In this paper, an annealed step-index fiber was used for a mode-scrambler with reproducible performance and source-launch-alignment insensitivity, and an all-fibre mode scrambler with a 10 cm length and insertion loss < 3.5 dB was demonstrated.
Abstract: A mode scrambler based on an annealed step-index fibre is shown to have reproducible performance and source-launch-alignment insensitivity. Devitrification produces scattering centres in the fibre that distribute light uniformly over both angle and radius. An all-fibre mode scrambler with a 10 cm length and an insertion loss < 3.5 dB is demonstrated.

TL;DR: In this paper, a new wavelength and mode-selective coupler utilizing intermodal coupling between a standard singlemode fiber (SMF) and a hollow optical fiber (HOF) is presented.
Abstract: We experimentally demonstrate a new wavelength- and mode-selective coupler utilizing intermodal coupling between a standard single-mode fiber (SMF) and a hollow optical fiber (HOF). The fabricated device routes optical signals such that a 1.3‐µm signal is directed to the HOF port, adiabatically converting the LP01 mode into a ring-shaped mode, which can be further connected to a gigabit ethernet link, reducing the differential mode-dispersion penalty. Optical signals near 1.5 µm, meanwhile, stay in the LP01 mode of the SMF arm for further connection to conventional wavelength-division multiplexing links based on erbium-doped fiber amplifiers. The performance of the device is characterized in terms of insertion loss, channel isolation, and mode-conversion efficiency.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reported the measurements of the twist induced circular birefringence in a single mode fiber by direct observation of the scattered light, and an analysis of the evolution of the polarization in a linearly bireringent twisted medium (applicable to weakly guiding single mode (fibers) is given using the coupled mode theory and Poincare sphere representation.
