TL;DR: In this article, high precision voltage measurements and in situ x-ray diffraction indicate a sequence of three distinct phase transitions as varies from 1 to 0.4, two of which are situated slightly above and below and are caused by an order/disorder transition of the lithium ions.
Abstract: Electrochemical properties of are studied as Li is deintercalated from . High precision voltage measurements and in situ x‐ray diffraction indicate a sequence of three distinct phase transitions as varies from 1 to 0.4. Two of the transitions are situated slightly above and below and are caused by an order/disorder transition of the lithium ions. The order/disorder transition is studied as a function of temperature allowing the determination of an order/disorder phase diagram. In situ x‐ray diffraction measurements facilitate a direct observation of the effects of deintercalation on the host lattice crystal structure. The other phase transition is shown to be first order (coexisting phases are observed for ) involving a significant expansion of the parameter of the hexagonal unit cell. We report the variation of the lattice constants of with and show that the phase transition to the lithium ordered phase near is accompanied by a lattice distortion to a monoclinic unit cell with , , and . Finally we report an overall phase diagram for and .

TL;DR: In this article, the content of free ZrO2 in partially stabilized zirconia ceramics by X-ray diffraction techniques was determined by linear calibration curves.
Abstract: Linear calibration curves were developed for determining the content of free ZrO2 in partially stabilized zirconia ceramics by X-ray diffraction techniques. Two methods were studied. The matrix method, in which free ZrO2 was considered to be distributed in a matrix (the cubic phase), gave approximately equal mass absorption coefficients for the monoclinic and cubic phases. The polymorph technique, in which the cubic phase was considered to be a polymorph of ZrO2 and in which integrated intensities were used, gave the better results.

TL;DR: A structural investigation revealed the orthorhombic phase to be of space group Pbc2(1), whose noncentrosymmetric nature is deemed responsible for the spontaneous polarization in this novel, nanoscale ferroelectrics.
Abstract: The transition metal oxides ZrO2 and HfO2 as well as their solid solution are widely researched and, like most binary oxides, are expected to exhibit centrosymmetric crystal structure and therewith linear dielectric characteristics. For this reason, those oxides, even though successfully introduced into microelectronics, were never considered to be more than simple dielectrics possessing limited functionality. Here we report the discovery of a field-driven ferroelectric phase transition in pure, sub 10 nm ZrO2 thin films and a composition- and temperature-dependent transition to a stable ferroelectric phase in the HfO2–ZrO2 mixed oxide. These unusual findings are attributed to a size-driven tetragonal to orthorhombic phase transition that in thin films, similar to the anticipated tetragonal to monoclinic transition, is lowered to room temperature. A structural investigation revealed the orthorhombic phase to be of space group Pbc21, whose noncentrosymmetric nature is deemed responsible for the spontaneous...

TL;DR: In this article, the photocatalytic activity of tetragonal BiVO4 for O2 evolution from an aqueous AgNO3 solution under visible light irradiation was negligible.
Abstract: BiVO4 powder with scheelite structure was obtained by hydrolyzing a nitric acid solution of Bi(NO3)3 and Na3VO4 with bases (Na2CO3 and NaHCO3) at room temperature. Tetragonal BiVO4 of a high-temperature form was obtained after 4.5 h of preparation time while monoclinic BiVO4 was done after 46 h. Although the structure and the band gap of tetragonal BiVO4 with scheelite structure were similar to those of monoclinic BiVO4, the photocatalytic activity of the tetragonal BiVO4 for O2 evolution from an aqueous AgNO3 solution under visible light irradiation was negligible. In contrast, the monoclinic BiVO4 showed high photocatalytic activity. Distortion of a Bi−O polyhedron by a 6s2 lone pair of Bi3+ plays an important role for high photocatalytic activity of the monoclinic BiVO4 under visible light irradiation.

TL;DR: A previously unreported ferroelectric phase has been discovered in a highly homogeneous sample of PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 by high-resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction measurements as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: A previously unreported ferroelectric phase has been discovered in a highly homogeneous sample of PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 by high-resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction measurements. At ambient temperature the sample has tetragonal symmetry (at=4.037 A, ct=4.138 A), and transforms below ∼250 K into a phase which, unexpectedly, has monoclinic symmetry (am=5.717 A, bm=5.703 A, cm=4.143 A, β=90.53°, at 20 K). The intensity data strongly indicate that the polar axis lies in the monoclinic ac plane close to the pseudocubic [111] direction, which would be an example of the species m3m(12)A2Fm predicted on symmetry grounds by Shuvalov.
