TL;DR: In this article, an asynchronously coupled global atmosphere-biome model is used to assess the dynamics of deserts and drought in the Sahel, Saudi-Arabia and the Indian subcontinent.
Abstract: An asynchronously coupled global atmosphere-biome model is used to assess the dynamics of deserts and drought in the Sahel, Saudi-Arabia and the Indian subcontinent. Under present-day conditions of solar irradiation and sea-surface temperatures, the model finds two solutions: the first solution yields the present-day distribution of vegetation and deserts and the second shows a northward spread of savanna and xerophytic shrub of some 600 km, particularly in the southwest Sahara. Comparison of atmospheric states associated with these solutions corroborates Charney’s theory of a self-induction of deserts through albedo enhancement in the Sahel. Over the Indian subcontinent, changes in vegetation are mainly caused by a positive feedback between increased soil moisture and stronger summer monsoon.

TL;DR: The first volume in Springer's Regional Climate Studies series as discussed by the authors focuses on the Mediterranean Basin and the Mediterranean cyclogenesis, which is a climatically interesting and diverse region, subject to the influences of the Mediterranean Sea and the large-scale circulation patterns associated with the south Asian monsoon, Siberian high pressure system, southern oscillation, and North Atlantic oscillation.
Abstract: The first volume in Springer's Regional Climate Studies series focuses on the Mediterranean Basin. This is a climatically interesting and diverse region, subject to the influences of the Mediterranean Sea and the large-scale circulation patterns associated with the south Asian monsoon, Siberian high pressure system, southern oscillation, and North Atlantic oscillation. All of these influences are modified by the complex local topography and characterized by regional processes such as Mediterranean cyclogenesis. It is also a sensitive region, with a long and rich human history where the impacts of past, present, and future climate variability on the rate of desertification, for example, are potentially large. Thus, the recent research into many facets of the climate of the Mediterranean Basin is welcome and timely. For researchers and students unfamiliar with the region, a standard overview textbook has not been available, so Mediterranean Climate—Variability and Trends has the potential to fill an important gap.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated new deep sea records from the low-latitude monsoon system, mainly corroborating the result of Schulz et al. (1998) that the Indian monsoon showed D/O variability.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors described the monsoon reversal in the Red Sea circulation near and above the sill depth and related it to the winds at the sea surface and the resulting changes in sea level in the southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

TL;DR: In this article, stable oxygen and carbon analyses of rapidly accumulating sediment cores from the eastern Arabian Sea were performed to show that the excess of evaporation over precipitation (E−P) steadily appears to have decreased during the last ∼10,000 to ∼2000 years, most probably due to an increasing trend in the summer monsoon rainfall.
