Abstract: Collectively moving object clusters are of particular interest in certain applications and have to be tracked as separate aggregated entities consisting of an unknown number of individuals. Tracking of convoys or large vehicles in wide area ground surveillance are practically important examples (GMTI: Ground Moving Target Indicator). In standard tracking algorithms, the objects of interest are usually considered as point source objects; i. e. compared to the sensor resolution their spatial extension is neglected. Due to the increasing resolution capabilities of modern sensors, however, different scattering centers of an extended object cam cause distinct detections. In this sense also collectively moving object groups can be considered as extended objects. Due to the resulting data association and resolution conflicts. any attempt of tracking individual objects within the group is no longer reasonable. In this paper ellipsoidal object extensions are modeled by random matrices, which are treated as additional state variables to be estimated. An important aspect is the incorporation of context information into the Bayesian data processing formalism. We here consider kinematical constraints such as road maps and sensor specific characteristics such as Doppler-blindness.

Abstract: Doppler signals from a two-port radar system are spectrally processed and searched for a pattern of points wherein clutter at a first instant of time is subsequently replaced by low-level returns indicating the movement of a target. The rate of change of the low-level signals, along the same range bin but different Doppler bins, is indicative of target azimuth position relative to the boresight of the radar antenna. The difference between the total Doppler detected from the target and the Doppler for the azimuth position of the black hole detection is the Doppler for the relative radial velocity of the target. Not only is the black hole and shadow (lack of detection) detectable but more measurable and detectable is the clutter signal difference with the target motion.

Abstract: A self-modulating, remote, moving target detector for intrusion alarms, vehicle detection, and remote speed and distance measurement that includes a remote continuous wave radar transceiver that is used to detect moving targets. The same frequency used for the radar transmission is modulated in a continuous manner in order to transmit radar data concerning a moving target to a remote location away from the radar transceiver. The transceiver oscillator is self-modulated by the reflected signal received from a moving target in the transceiver and retransmitted such that the primary radar signal becomes the information carrier concerning the moving target, which is received remotely, in order to activate an alarm or a display system showing the moving target. The system could be utilized with any frequency from audio to light, with RF and microwave of primary interest.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for passive classification of moving targets which uses pulse Doppler radar wherein in addition to the primary Doppler echo the radar echo signals of the moving targets also contain periodically repeating Dopplers side line frequencies which can be utilized for classification of the targets. These Doppler side lines occur because of the periodic change of reflectivity of the target as, for example, due to rotating parts on the target and in the invention are investigated by means of spectral analysis for identification of the target. For example, land vehicles, wheeled and track vehicles can be easily distinguished with the invention and a first rough evaluation and in a fine detail evaluation, can be classified for every target type.
