Abstract: A recently realized concept of a reconfigurable hardware test-bed suitable for real-time mobile communication with multiple antennas is presented in this paper. We discuss the reasons and prerequisites for real-time capable MIMO transmission systems which may allow channel adaptive transmission to increase link stability and data throughput. We describe a concept of an efficient implementation of MIMO signal processing using FPGAs and DSPs. We focus on some basic linear and nonlinear MIMO detection and precoding algorithms and their optimization for a DSP target, and a few principal steps for computational performance enhancement are outlined. An experimental verification of several real-time MIMO transmission schemes at high data rates in a typical office scenario is presented and results on the achieved BER and throughput performance are given. The different transmission schemes used either channel state information at both sides of the link or at one side only (transmitter or receiver). Spectral efficiencies of more than 20 bits/s/Hz and a throughput of more than 150 Mbps were shown with a single-carrier transmission. The experimental results clearly show the feasibility of real-time high data rate MIMO techniques with state-of-the-art hardware and that more sophisticated baseband signal processing will be an essential part of future communication systems. A discussion on implementation challenges towards future wireless communication systems supporting higher data rates (1 Gbps and beyond) or high mobility concludes the paper.

Abstract: Provided are a data transmitting and receiving method for a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system, and a transmitter and a receiver using the method. Accordingly, since precoding matrices of a codebook is constituted using a rotation matrix, expansion of the codebook is easy, and since each of the precoding matrices is determined according to the number of transmit antennas, the codebook is systematically created according to a system. In addition the codebook can be applied to even a correlated channel, and the minimum distance between precoding matrices can advantageously be maximized.

Abstract: Multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) has a potential to realize cost effective high data rate internet access to the homes in rural areas. We propose the novel Ngara Access system where the central access point (AP) is equipped with a uniform circular array (UCA) installed on a high tower while each UT is equipped with a directional antenna free of clutter, providing predominantly line-of-sight (LoS) channel environment. Using a three dimensional geometric optics based channel model, we provide bit error probability simulation results which show that the spectral efficiency of the proposed system can be improved linearly as a function of the number of antenna elements at AP, without increasing the total transmitting power, provided a half wavelength antenna spacing is maintained and user groups of four or more are used to avoid ill-conditioned channel. Hardware demonstrators based on the proposed system have achieved the system spectral efficiency of 20 bits/s/Hz in an actual rural environment and of 67 bits/s/Hz in a laboratory environment at a lower UHF band.

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a novel multimode multi-input multi-output (MIMO) antenna system composed of a dual-element MIMO cellular antenna and dual-element MIMO Wi-Fi antenna for mobile terminal applications. The antenna system has a double-ring structure and can be integrated with the metal frame of mobile terminals. With the multimode excitation, the MIMO cellular antenna can operate at 830–900 MHz, 1700–2200 MHz, and 2400–2700 MHz, for 2G, 3G, and LTE bands, respectively. The MIMO Wi-Fi antenna can cover two Wi-Fi bands from 2.4 to 2.5 GHz and from 5.2 to 5.8 GHz. The effect of a user’s body on the MIMO cellular antenna is investigated on CTIA standard phantoms and a real user. Since our antenna mainly operates in the loop mode, it has a much lower efficiency loss than conventional mobile antennas in both talking and data modes. Our theoretical analysis and experiments have shown that our design has low body loss and an attractive industrial design.

Abstract: 3-dimensional Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (3D MIMO) systems have received great interest recently because of the spatial diversity advantage and capability for full-dimensional beamforming, making them promising candidates for practical realization of massive MIMO. In this paper, we present a low-cost test equipment (channel sounder) and post-processing algorithms suitable for investigating 3D MIMO channels, as well as the results from a measurement campaign for obtaining elevation and azimuth characteristics in an outdoor-to-indoor (O2I) environment. Due to limitations in available antenna switches, our channel sounder consists of a hybrid switched/virtual cylindrical array with effectively 480 antenna elements at the base station (BS). The virtual setup increased the overall MIMO measurement duration, thereby introducing phase drift errors in the measurements. Using a reference antenna measurements, we estimate and correct for the phase errors during post-processing. We provide the elevation and azimuth angular spreads, for the measurements done in an urban macro-cellular (UMa) and urban micro-cellular (UMi) environments, and study their dependence on the UE height. Based on the measurements done with UE placed on different floors, we study the feasibility of separating users in the elevation domain. The measured channel impulse responses are also used to study the channel hardening aspects of Massive MIMO and the optimality of Maximum Ratio Combining (MRC) receiver.
