TL;DR: A MPEG-7 based multimedia retrieval system for digital museum is introduced, integrated into SDU-ADM, Archaeological Digital Museum of Shandong University and exploits eXist, a native xml database system with XQuery support to manage and query the MPEG- 7 meta data.
Abstract: A MPEG-7 based multimedia retrieval system for digital museum is introduced in this paper. The system utilizes description tools standardized in MPEG-7, like color and shape descriptors and simple semantic annotations, to support image retrieval. The implementation also exploits eXist, a native xml database system with XQuery support to manage and query the MPEG-7 meta data. Two query methods are supported: Query-By-Example(QBE) and Query-By-Keyword(QBK). This system is integrated into SDU-ADM, Archaeological Digital Museum of Shandong University.

TL;DR: This paper investigates temporal multimedia object modeling issues, and introduces a five temporal axes model for representing temporal multimedia objects, a temporal expansion to the OMEGA multimedia object model which has been under development at the University of Library and Information Science.
Abstract: Although object-oriented technology is necessary to construct a multimedia database management system, it is not sufficient because it lacks some functions which are essential to support temporal and spatial multimedia objects. In this paper, we investigate temporal multimedia object modeling issues: We first deIIne temporal objects, temporal attributes, and temporal relationships among objects. Then a five temporal axes model for representing temporal multimedia objects is introduced. The five temporal axes an absolute, a relative, a quasi-, a physical, and a presentation time axis are necessary to describe timedependent properties of multimedia objects in modeling, implementing and use. This model is a temporal expansion to the OMEGA multimedia object model which has been under development at the University of Library and Information Science.

TL;DR: This chapter focuses on current research, and looks closely at general design characteristics of operating systems that can support multimedia applications.
Abstract: Most of the research work on multimedia systems to date has been carried out by the network research community. Much less work has been done by the operating system research community, but now there are quite a few projects in progress. This chapter focuses on current research, and looks closely at general design characteristics of operating systems that can support multimedia applications.

TL;DR: The mrkd-tree index structure and the proposed video representation are employed to fulfill fast and robust search of short video clips in large video collections with the total length of 15 hours.
Abstract: Content based retrieval of similar multimedia objects (e.g. images, text, and videos) is an important research issue in the field of multimedia database. In this demo, we present a fast and robust video clip searching system. This system consists of two major modules, namely, robust video representation and fast searching. Different from traditional key frame-based histogram methods, we employ the cumulative histogram to represent the ordinal features and color range features for a video segment. This representation provides a spatio-temporal description of the whole segment. Our experiment has shown it is effective for capturing the patterns of short video clips such as commercial, program lead in/out, flying logo in sports video, etc. In order to improve the performance in searching large video database, we introduce the index structure to deal with video search from the viewpoint of query processing (e.g. K-NN query, Range query, etc.) in high-dimensional spaces. Different query processing support different search tasks. In this demo, we employ the mrkd-tree index structure and the proposed video representation to fulfill fast and robust search of short video clips (i.e. news video lead-in/out, replay logo, commercial) in large video collections with the total length of 15 hours.

TL;DR: This work extracts QoS related information from the meta-data and uses this knowledge for QoS guided query processing, QoS negotiation between multimedia database system and multimedia object request broker, and for early resource reservation to select an optimal middleware configuration and to allocate the appropriate amount of resources in all system components without increasing initial response times.
Abstract: Information repositories and database systems that combine time-independent and time-dependent data will be an integral element of the future information infrastructure. A seamless integration-especially with respect to QoS-of (multimedia) database systems is of central importance. Furthermore, response times are very important for these systems, but the particular QoS to be supported and the amount of needed resources depend on the query result. Thus, QoS negotiation and resource reservation can only be performed after the query result is known. In our solution, we extract QoS related information from the meta-data and use this knowledge for QoS guided query processing, QoS negotiation between multimedia database system and multimedia object request broker, and for early resource reservation. This approach enables us to select an optimal middleware configuration and to allocate the appropriate amount of resources in all system components without increasing initial response times.
