TL;DR: This work introduces a pure GPU architecture to build the Permutation Index and to solve approximate similarity queries on multimedia databases.
Abstract: Manipulating and retrieving multimedia data has received increasing attention with the advent of cloud storage facilities The ability of querying by similarity over large data collections is mandatory to improve storage and user interfaces But, all of them are expensive operations to solve only in CPU; thus, it is convenient to take into account High Performance Computing (HPC) techniques in their solutions The Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) as an alternative HPC device has been increasingly used to speedup certain computing processes This work introduces a pure GPU architecture to build the Permutation Index and to solve approximate similarity queries on multimedia databases The empirical results of each implementation have achieved different level of speedup which are related with characteristics of GPU and the particular database used

TL;DR: The issues of performance for deriving images from a sequence of operations are explored by using a Web-based image editor and an image server to understand a logical model language that represents images.
Abstract: In order to understand similarity between images, recent research has focused on adaptable searches (Seidl and Kreigel, 1997) and fuzzy queries (Fagin, 1998). However, one of the best means for determining similarity between images is to know how the image was created (Brown et al., 1999). If the image is a combination of other images in the database, then there is a great deal of similarity between the base images and the created one. This requires extending the database to support image editing operations. We have built a preliminary system which does this by using a Web-based image editor and an image server. The editor and the server understand a logical model language that represents images. This paper then explores the issues of performance for deriving images from a sequence of operations.

TL;DR: A novel music database system equipped with a musical knowledge base that assists database processing automatically by providing formal intelligence about music, and introduces a metadata model dealing with sensibility of end users.
Abstract: A large number of music resources are provided in the world-wide scope. However, users have to listen to each music data to access and choose their favourite ones, since conventional music databases have not concerned fast browsing and easy comparison of entire search results. In such situation, music collections require smart methods of searching and browsing. In this paper, we propose a novel music database system equipped with a musical knowledge base that assists database processing automatically by providing formal intelligence about music. The musical knowledge base sets appropriate parameters for database processing. It offers an easy and intuitive mechanism for general users to retrieve musical compositions. One of the most significant advantages of our data-base system is that it introduces a metadata model dealing with sensibility of end users. Our approach makes it possible to realize intuitive music discovering. We show several experimental results to clarify the feasibility of our method.

TL;DR: An easy method is proposed for face image indexing by using a knowledge-based method that artists draw human portraits to analyze artists how to draw a portrait based on human face proportions related knowledge.
Abstract: Image indexing is one of the most popular research areas of computer vision, such as for digital libraries, multimedia systems and TV program systems. This paper focuses on the face image indexing applications. The authors proposed a new scheme for face image indexing by using a knowledge-based method that artists draw human portraits. The basic idea is to analyze artists how to draw a portrait based on human face proportions related knowledge. And then, we use these rules to process face image indexing. This process provides a new alternative way for indexing human face image in terms of the knowledge-based method. Our system is composed of two main steps. The first step is facial features extracting. And then, it goes to human face image indexing. There are two advantages of this system. First, the system provides a simple synthesis procedure. Secondly, the paper proposes an easy method which is important for reducing waiting time of delaying cost of Internet server.
