TL;DR: This study explains how a fuzzy rule-based system integrated to a fuzzy spatial, temporal or multimedia database improves the query capabilities of the database system intelligently.
Abstract: Many new database applications require intelligent information management to satisfy different users' query demands. One way to convert conventional database systems to intelligent information systems is to enhance them with a rule-based system. On the other hand, fuzziness becomes unavoidable for some applications and therefore both the database and rule- based systems should handle fuzziness existing in data and queries. This study explains how a fuzzy rule-based system integrated to a fuzzy spatial, temporal or multimedia database improves the query capabilities of the database system intelligently. Fuzzy query types that can be supported by the rule-based system to improve querying power are discussed.

TL;DR: This paper proposes the concept of gradient-based signatures in order to aggregate content-based features of multimedia objects by means of generative models and provides theoretical insights into this approach including closed-form expressions for the computation of gradient -based signatures with respect to Gaussian mixture models.
Abstract: With the continuous rise of multimedia, the question of how to access large-scale multimedia databases efficiently has become of crucial importance. Given a multimedia database comprising millions of multimedia objects, how to approximate the content-based properties of the corresponding feature representations in order to carry out similarity search efficiently and with high accuracy? In this paper, we propose the concept of gradient-based signatures in order to aggregate content-based features of multimedia objects by means of generative models. We provide theoretical insights into our approach including closed-form expressions for the computation of gradient-based signatures with respect to Gaussian mixture models and additionally investigate different binarization methods for gradient-based signatures in order to query databases comprising millions of multimedia objects with high accuracy in less than one second.

TL;DR: By introducing aspect-ECA rules with the aspect-oriented data model, it is possible to provide the active database functionality in cross-over multimedia database environments without affecting application structures and local information system structures.
Abstract: An active database mechanism is important to realize new information provision in current mobile and ubiquitous computing environments. Applying an active database mechanism to multidatabase environments realizes the automatic and meaningful information provision from various and heterogeneous databases. In this paper, we propose an aspect-oriented active rule system, called Aspect-ARM, for heterogeneous multimedia information resources. The Aspect-ARM provides an ECA rule language, called an aspect-ECA rule language, in adapting the rule system to the multimedia information in active and dynamic multidatabase environments. The aspect-ECA rule language is designed on a framework of conceptual data modeling for structuring complex multimedia data from multiple viewpoints. This model focuses on two concepts: aspects of multimedia data and relationships among multimedia data. We call this data model an aspect-oriented data model. The feature of this model is to deal with meanings included implicitly in media data in active rule evaluation. By introducing aspect-ECA rules with the aspect-oriented data model, it is possible to provide the active database functionality in cross-over multimedia database environments without affecting application structures and local information system structures.

TL;DR: The paper compares LHI-tree to FLANN (Fast Library for Approximate Nearest Neighbors), an effective and frequently instanced implementation of ANN search, and shows that they produce similar lists of retrieved images (although FLANN works only on RAM).
Abstract: Querying of nearest neighbour (NN) elements on large data collections is an important task for several information or content retrieval tasks. In the paper Local Hash-indexing tree (LHI-tree) is introduced, which is a disk-based index scheme that uses RAM for quick space partition localization and hard disks for the hash indexing. When large collections are considered, such hybrid data structure should be used to implement an effective indexing service. The proposed structure can produce list of approximate nearest neighbours. We compare LHI-tree to FLANN (Fast Library for Approximate Nearest Neighbors), an effective and frequently instanced implementation of ANN search. We show that they produce similar lists of retrieved images (although FLANN works only on RAM). In case of huge multimedia database a disk based indexing and retrieval method has a significant advantage against a vector based system running in RAM data. For the visual content indexing we built an image descriptor composed of four different information representations: edge histogram, entropy histogram, pattern histogram and dominant component colour characteristics. The paper will mention the content based retrieval of Hungarian Wikipedia images.

TL;DR: A general architecture of the multimedia data mining, including multimedia database, multimedia mining engine, multimediamining engine and multimedia mining interface is presented, which emphasizes on several mining techniques, such as classification, association and clustering.
Abstract: This paper presents a general architecture of the multimedia data mining(M3), including multimedia database(MD), multimedia mining engine(MME) and multimedia mining interface(MMI). It emphasizes on several mining techniques, such as classification, association and clustering. Special mining methods and content of image, video and audio are discussed too.
