TL;DR: A digital multimedia methodology is presented which implements the above dynamic representation approach and achieves high student learning rates, even to nonmathematically-literate students, while it allows the teacher / lecturer to explain basic concepts that are otherwise difficult to introduce using conventional media.
Abstract: The increased interest for developing new representation techniques and tools for proving and demonstrating basic mathematical propositions and concepts is the forefront of educational research worldwide in the area of e-learning for mathematics. Although many novel ideas have been proposed for illustrating basic mathematical (i.e. geometrical) concepts, currently there is a lack of effective methods to dynamically reproduce an alternative representation of the underlying concepts. The proposed approach introduces valuable explanatory tools for efficiently supporting the learning objectives, enabling students to reach the core of each notion. In this work, a digital multimedia methodology is presented which implements the above dynamic representation approach. Recent, state-of-the-art trends in multimedia technology related to modern two or three-dimensional (2D or 3D) object modelling are utilised in order to efficiently reproduce a virtual mathematical environment in which selected mathematical concepts. Apart from the time-dependent dynamic representation, advanced user interaction features are also supported for determining various representation parameters (such as the view and lighting position, as well as the time resolution / speed). Additionally, accurate 3D sound projection techniques are employed in cases that the spatial sound information enhances the illustrated perceptual effect. For convenient access of the multimedia content, the proposed methodology includes a web interface and a multimedia database, offering advanced searching capabilities. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed multimedia framework, a number of geometrical concepts are selected and applied for the instruction of corresponding high-school and university courses and will be presented in detail. The application of the proposed multimedia approach in these courses has shown that it achieves high student learning rates, even to nonmathematically-literate students, while it allows the teacher / lecturer to explain basic concepts that are otherwise difficult to introduce using conventional media.

TL;DR: The logical and physical data model for multimedia database of Malaysia cultural heritage artefacts management was designed and employs a hybrid of museum metadata standard known as ISO 21127:2006 or CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model (CRM) and multimedia database standards known as MPEG-7.
Abstract: Vast amount of multimedia especially in the cultural heritage domain needed a special data model to cater the need of both collection management and digital multimedia content. Multimedia database for cultural heritage application are currently active research activities, however limited research has been done in the local context. The intention of this research is to design a data model for multimedia database of cultural heritage artefact management as well as tries to fill the gap of cultural heritage dan multimedia database research in Malaysia. A multiple case studies is conducted to gather information and requirements from the local museums governing organizations. Information regarding the relevant guidelines, standards and reference models are also studied. The logical and physical data model for multimedia database of Malaysia cultural heritage artefacts management was designed. The data model employ a hybrid of museum metadata standard known as ISO 21127:2006 or CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model (CRM) and multimedia database standards known as MPEG-7.

TL;DR: The architecture and capabilities of a compute-aided neurodiagnosis workstation prototype developed to integrate a picture archiving and communication system (PACS), automated image registration, and volumetric visualization to aid the non-invasive workups of epilepsy patients are described.
Abstract: This paper describes the architecture and capabilities of a compute-aided neurodiagnosis workstation prototype developed to integrate a picture archiving and communication system (PACS), automated image registration, and volumetric visualization to aid the non-invasive workups of epilepsy patients. This new approach of marrying volume visualization and image registration with a large scale PACS archive would make significant potential contribution to neurological diagnoses and pre-operative planning. This medical workstation can access and analyze multimodal brain images and patient records archived in the standardized PACS. Brain imaging modalities currently under study include magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography, magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and magnetoencephalography. The graphical user interface (GUI) is written on top of the popular X-window environment. It enables the physician to extract functional and structural information from multimedia patient data stored in PACS and textual information systems, as well as archiving them into a remote database server for future image indexing.© (1995) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. TL;DR: This investigation will formulate criteria for specifying and scheduling the skipping/pausing of media streams with asynchronous presentations when various delays occur, and propose a framework for supporting the continuous and synchronized presentation of multimedia streams in educational digital libraries.
Abstract: An educational digital library is a specialized digital library containing instructional materials, such as class lectures, seminar presentations, and various training materials. These materials consist of the combination of audio, video and image data. We believe that such an environment has diverse uses, including student training, human resource development, and asynchronous distance learning. In this paper, we investigate a framework for supporting the continuous and synchronized presentation of multimedia streams in educational digital libraries. This framework includes the design of an information infrastructure built on top of a distributed multimedia database environment, the specification and representation of synchronization on media streams, the realization of appropriate synchronization granularity and the scheduling principles for the presentation of multimedia streams. This investigation will formulate criteria for specifying and scheduling the skipping/pausing of media streams with asynchronous presentations when various delays occur. Adaptability to various quality-of-service requirements are supported in the framework. Synchronization mechanisms at the client side are then proposed to implement the framework. Experimental analysis are conducted using instructional materials. Thus, this framework can be readily used to facilitate various education and training applications.

TL;DR: A Web-based authoring tool to create interactive multimedia contents for English learning and special language tools to access corpus, manipulate multimedia elements, and create collaborative learning sessions are designed in the system.
Abstract: We present a Web-based authoring tool to create interactive multimedia contents for English learning. Target users of this authoring tool are English teachers and content designer, therefore, ease of use and simplicity are the fundamental issues. Furthermore, the authoring tool and multimedia database are integrated in the context of intelligent Web-based interactive language learning (IWiLL) system. Special language tools to access corpus, manipulate multimedia elements, and create collaborative learning sessions are designed in the system. These resources and tools on hand yield the potential to create rich and deep interactive multimedia contents.
