16 May 2019TL;DR: An approach to automatically convert modern standard Arabic children’s stories to the finest representative images that can efficiently illustrate the meaning of words is introduced.
Abstract: Children with learning difficulties (LD) are increasing dramatically in the Arab world. Such children require quick intervention especially during the early childhood years. This paper presents a dynamic multimedia system for helping children with LD to overcome their learning problems. We introduce an approach to automatically convert modern standard Arabic children’s stories to the finest representative images that can efficiently illustrate the meaning of words. Specifically, first, we apply natural language processing techniques to analyze the text in stories and we extract keywords of all characters and events in each sentence. Second, we apply an image captioning process through a pre-trained deep learning model for all retrieved images from our multimedia database as well as the Google search engine. Third, using sentence similarities, most significant images are retrieved back by selecting top highest similarity values. The proposed system aims to better enhance understanding, communications, and thinking skills for children with LD in elementary schools and special education centers.

16 Dec 2002TL;DR: Weighted Euclidean distance uses a diagonal matrix, which re-weighs the importance of each feature, and generalized ellipsoid distance takes further consideration on correlation between any two features to derive two new distance measures for content-based audio classification, based on reweighting and de-correlating each feature.
Abstract: While the size of multimedia database increases, the demand for efficient search for multimedia data becomes more and more urgent. Most recent works on audio classification and retrieval adopt Euclidean distance as their distance measures. However, Euclidean distance is not a perceptual distance measure for some audio features. The purpose of this work is to derive two new distance measures for content-based audio classification, which are based on reweighting and de-correlating each feature. Weighted Euclidean distance uses a diagonal matrix, which re-weighs the importance of each feature, and generalized ellipsoid distance takes further consideration on correlation between any two features. An audio database of 85 sound clips is used as our training set. The experimental results show that the generalized ellipsoid distance yields the best result and achieves an overall correction rate of classification.

TL;DR: Five types of smelling objects were implemented that were used for storing and retrieving olfactory information together with audio-visual information in/from a multimedia database system.
Abstract: The paper presents our view on the ways that olfactory information could be integrated into multimedia database applications by means of smelling objects. Until recently, multimedia applications have been mainly limited to the use of audio- visual information, stimulating only two of the five senses of human beings. The development of olfactory devices, along with significant progress in understanding the human olfactory system in the last years offers tremendous opportunities for building multimedia applications stimulating also the sense of smell. This could bring important advance in fields like education, medicine, military, and entertainment in the near future. We implemented five types of smelling objects that we used for storing and retrieving olfactory information together with audio-visual information in/from a multimedia database system.

TL;DR: The combination of multimedia database construction project is given the browser database — middleware file system (or hyperlink) the four architecture of the distributed multimedia database model; database for the system selection, development tools, development environment and data organization were discussed.
Abstract: Distributed multimedia database is the distributed database and multimedia database combination. Distributed mass of large distributed database multimedia database, especially in recent years in education, health, culture, tourism, government administration, commerce and other aspects of a wide range of applications. Based on the study of distributed large-scale multimedia database technology, the combination of multimedia database construction project is given the browser database — middleware file system (or hyperlink) the four architecture of the distributed multimedia database model; database for the system selection, development tools, development environment and data organization were discussed.
