TL;DR: The advancement of multimedia technologies has enabled electronic processing of information to be recorded in formats that are different from the standard text format, which has led to the development of new digitizing and compression tools and technology.
Abstract: Copyright © 2001, Idea Group Publishing. INTRODUCTION The advancement of multimedia technologies has enabled electronic processing of information to be recorded in formats that are different from the standard text format. These include image, audio and video formats. The video format is a rich and expressive form of media used in many areas of our everyday life, such as in education, medicine and engineering. The expressiveness of video documents is the main reason for their domination in future information systems. Therefore, effective and efficient access to video information that supports video-based applications has become a critical research area. This has led to the development of, for example, new digitizing and compression tools and technology, video data models and query languages, video data management systems and video analyzers. With applications of a vast amount of stored video data, such as news archives and digital television, video retrieval became, and still is, an active area of research.

TL;DR: In this article, a method for controlling a large display in a public space used data transmitted over one data network and control transmitted over a second network, such as a bluetooth network.
Abstract: Information display system has at least one display device (30) for information, especially multi-media information such as advertising, with said information supplied from a database via a data transfer network (10), especially a mobile phone network, and a control device (22), for controlling the display via a second network (20) such as a bluetooth network. The control device can be coupled to a user's mobile phone (21). An Independent claim is made for a method for controlling a large display in a public space used data transmitted over one data network and control transmitted over a second network.

TL;DR: In this paper, a detailed specification of a multimedia metamodel suitable for a federation of databases is provided, which is used to describe how data is structured, and the types of operations that are possible.
Abstract: There has been a large and varied amount of research into federated database systems, and more recently, this has advanced in the direction of federations of multimedia databases. However, in each project studied so far, none have placed special emphasis on the role of metadata in such systems. In this paper, a detailed specification of a multimedia metamodel suitable for a federation of databases, is provided. By illustrating the metamodel, it is clear to users, administrators and programmers exactly howdata is structured, and the types of operations that are possible.

TL;DR: A translation of selected query types from MPQF to SQL is proposed based on an especially designed relational schema that preserves typed data of the image descriptions.
Abstract: The growth of multimedia is increasing the need for standards to access and search distributed repositories. Recently, the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) has developed the MPEG Query Format (MPQF) to make multimedia access and search easier and interoperable across search engines and repositories. Since MPQF is not supported by any database products including native XML databases and relational databases, a translation of MPQF to the multimedia database query language is required. This paper presents a system for querying relational MPEG-7 image database with MPQF. A translation of selected query types from MPQF to SQL is proposed based on an especially designed relational schema that preserves typed data of the image descriptions.

TL;DR: The paper shows how database systems can be architected to support multimedia data, making use of an object-relational database system such as PostgreSQL, and shows that there is a significant change in retrieval rate and Web access time when data is stored in a single database instead of a file server.
Abstract: There has been much interest in databases that store multimedia data, which comprise static media, like text and images, and dynamic or continuous media, like audio and video. Conventional database systems are designed for managing textual and numerical data. Storing and retrieving such data is often based on simple comparisons of text or numerical values. However, this method of storing and retrieval is not adequate for the multimedia data, since the digitized representation of these data types does not convey the reality of these media items. The conventional method is to store the large multimedia data in a file server and store the associated metadata in a database. The retrieval is done by downloading the files from one computer to the user's computer before playing it. The large size of these files results in long download times. The paper proposes an alternative method of storing multimedia data along with its associated metadata in an object-relational database. The proposed method offers faster retrieval time, secured backup, and concurrent login. The paper shows how database systems can be architected to support multimedia data, making use of an object-relational database system such as PostgreSQL. The main challenge is delivering data over the Web using real time video streaming. The results show that there is a significant change in retrieval rate and Web access time when data is stored in a single database instead of a file server. The application of a multimedia database thus created can be used in different application domains such as digital libraries, training and education, medical databases containing X-rays, etc.
