TL;DR: This paper presents a novel browsing technique based on a new indexing scheme, the Hierarchical Cellular Tree, which is designed to bring an effective solution especially for indexing large-scale multimedia databases and furthermore to provide an enhanced browsing capability, which enables user to make a guided tour within the database.
Abstract: One of the challenges in the development of content-based multimedia retrieval application is to achieve an efficient browsing and navigation scheme. Since browsing requires the capability of handling the entire database, a particular visualization system and tool(s) for navigation should be provided. Otherwise, browsing may turn out to be a disorienting process. Database items should be organized and especially for large databases the underlying organization scheme such as the indexing structure should provide a hierarchical representation of the database. This paper presents a novel browsing technique based on a new indexing scheme, the Hierarchical Cellular Tree, which is designed to bring an effective solution especially for indexing large-scale multimedia databases and furthermore to provide an enhanced browsing capability, which enables user to make a guided tour within the database. A pre-emptive cell search mechanism is introduced in order to prevent the corruption of large multimedia item collections due to the limited discrimination obtained from visual and aural descriptors. In addition, similar items are focused within appropriate cellular structures, which will be subject to mitosis operations when the dissimilarity emerges as a result of irrelevant item insertions. Mitosis operations ensure to keep the cells in a focused and compact form and yet the cells can grow into any dimension as long as compactness prevails. Experimental results show that the HCT indexing body can conveniently be used for efficient browsing and navigation operations among the multimedia database items.

TL;DR: This paper proposes a method to translate an MPQF query to SQL that relational based multimedia database can evaluate and execute.
Abstract: The MPEG Query Format (MPQF) is one of the new standardization initiatives which aim to provide a standardized interface to XML-based multimedia retrieval systems. Since relational databases such as Oracle, DB2 and MS SQL Server are still the mainstream database products in practice to store multimedia data. In this paper we propose a method to translate an MPQF query to SQL that relational based multimedia database can evaluate and execute.

TL;DR: It is argued that implementation efficiency can be improved by adopting a hybrid organization, that is, a relation-based scheme is used on disk to speed up associative access and an object-based approach is used in main memory to facilitate manipulations of single objects.
Abstract: The Multimedia database of SPRITE is the central repository in which all information concerning documents is stored, including the contents and logical structure. When SPRITE is used in some application environment, it must be possible to integrate new applications or customize the available ones. This is to be achieved by the extensibility function. Extensibility enables a database system to be modelled as an evolutionary object. The basic principles of achieving extensibility are modularity and reusability. It is generally recognized that the object- oriented approach can greatly help in achieving these extensibility goals (see chapter 11). In the same chapter, it is argued that implementation efficiency can be improved by adopting a hybrid organization, that is, a relation-based scheme is used on disk to speed up associative access and an object-based approach is used in main memory to facilitate manipulations of single objects. In the SPRITE database this is realized by means of an object- oriented layer around a commercially available relational system (Sybase — see chapter 7 for more details).

TL;DR: This paper illustrates some issues arising when designing an advanced teleshopping system based on a multimedia database by outlining a conceptual model (MMAIN) able to support the ESSAI multimedia database.
Abstract: D. Mainol, F. Mercallil, R. Negrini2 I - Centro di Cultura Scientifica ‘A Iessandro Volta” - Villa Olmo, Como - Italy 2 - Politecnico di Milan0 - p.za Leonardo Da Vinci 32, Milan0 - Italy ABSTRACT This paper illustrates some issues arising when designing an advanced teleshopping system based on a multimedia database. In particular, it is focused on a conceptual model (MMAIN) able to support the multimedia database. The studies here reported are part of the RACE Project ESSAI, whose goal is to implement by the end of 1994 a prototype teleshopping system based on advanced multimedia technologies. A large multimedia catalogue of products to be sold is to be implemented as part of the system. The high quality of multimedia data and the high flexibility of the data model required by such a system make the ESSAI multimedia database a rather advanced prototype. 1. INTRODUCTION Multimedia technology opens the road to completely new ways to conceive computer applications. As a consequence, completely new ways of defining and manipulating data managed by those applications are needed. The ESSAI Project, sponsored by the Commission of the European Communities under the RACE II Programme, is not an exception: it aims at implementing a teleshopping system prototype - made possible by the development of new hardware technologies - whose data management requirements are not adequately covered by traditional database management techniques. For this reason, research activities have been started in the frame of the project in order to first define the peculiar requirements, in terms of data management, of this kind of application and secondly to design a feasible solution. Various databases are present in ESSAI; in this paper we will concentrate on the most innovative one, i.e., the multimedia database containing information about products to be sold through the system. At present, the requirement analysis has been completed and a conceptual model for the data has been sketched. The goal of this paper is to outline these main conclusions, on which the implementation of the ESSAI prototype will be based. In section 2 an overview of the whole ESSAI system is given, in order to better focus the problem. In section 3 the basic requirements for multimedia data management are listed. In section 4 a conceptual model capable to support the ESSAI multimedia database, called MMAIN, is discussed. In section 5 a logical architecture for a system supporting MMAIN is presented. In section 6 some conclusion remarks are reported. In Appendix A a summary of MMAlN concepts is presented. 2. TEE ESSAI SYSTEM The aim of the RACE II Project ESSAI is to implement by the end of 1994 a prototype teleshopping application based on an Integrated Broadband Communication network (IBC network). The fbndamental idea underlying the ESSAI Project is to show that, as the communication networks will offer more and more bandwidth at lower prices, the implementation of a teleshopping system based on many low cost vending terminals connected to a unique

TL;DR: The evaluation results demonstrate a significant impact, which can be used for targeted search, and show that temporal information is useful if the period during which a the temporal statement holds is limited.
Abstract: We designed CROEQS, which allows users to search a multimedia database. The query formulation is not only based on text, but also on higher-level attributes: users can query videos about persons based on additional information about that person. The aim of CROEQS is to build a more efficient search engine, able to respond to queries on a higher level. To this end it makes use of an ontology in which the domain knowledge on people fulfilling a role during a temporal interval in general, and politicians holding a political office specifically. In this paper, we focus on the impact of the semantic clause on the result set size. The evaluation results demonstrate a significant impact, which can be used for targeted search, and show that temporal information is useful if the period during which a the temporal statement holds is limited.
