TL;DR: This chapter describes an information system reactive toward the vulnerability of the hazardous materials (HazMat) transportation, which is a federated information system that interacts with many remote systems that store or produce environmental data.
Abstract: INTRODUCTION The concept of Environmental Information System (EIS) emerged from the concerns and the efforts carried on by world wide private and official organisations in order to promote an effective use of the environmental data. These data are of various natures such as statistics, thematic maps, or documents describing the identification and the quantification of the environmental resources. The Environmental Information Systems became institutional tools providing pragmatic solutions for sustainable development in various fields. The objective of an EIS is to increase the quality and the efficiency in the decision-making process. To achieve this goal, the EIS requires the integration of various information processing technologies: Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Database Management Systems (DBMS), Space Imagery, Decision Support Systems (DSS), etc. However, the implementation of such an integration generates new requirements, namely, data interoperability, data description by metadata, reverse engineering from existing applications and remote data access and data processing. This leads to reconsider the analysis and the design methodology. Another difficulty of implementation of an EIS comes from the diversity of knowledge concerning the environment and the multiplicity of actors in this field. This leads to various ways to perceive and represent data depending on the field. Actually, not only are these data complex and heterogeneous, but they are also analysed according to multiple points of view. Indeed, the analysis of any phenomenon over the environment can be made from any of the following points of view, be it economic and social, ecological, territorial, demographic or organisational. It involves problems of integration of those points of view, and organisational problems. Finally, data availability is crucial to make an EIS operational. Indeed, an EIS is a federated information system. It interacts with many remote systems that store or produce environmental data. In spite of this distributed system architecture, there should be no failure in accessing data. Specific mechanisms are then necessary such as replicated databases [Pacitti et al., 1999]. This chapter describes an information system reactive toward the vulnerability of the hazardous materials (HazMat) transportation. This system arises from a project involving the authors [Boulmakoul et al., 1997a], [Boulmakoul et al., 1997b]. The project aims at developing a Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) for hazardous materials transportation routing and monitoring. Hence, this chapter constitutes an operational contribution in the area of EIS. This chapter is organised as the following. The next section introduces basic concepts and research works related to HazMat …

TL;DR: A case study of an image retrieval system based on a notion of similarity between images in a multimedia database and where a user request can be an image file or a keyword, which is more efficient than leading CBIR systems such as ERIC7, PEIR, PathoPic and CSE.
Abstract: This paper presents a case study of an image retrieval system based on a notion of similarity between images in a multimedia database and where a user request can be an image file or a keyword. The CBIR (content based image retrieval) system, the current system of search for information (SSI) -e.g. PEIR, MIRC, MIR, IRMA, and Pathopic- and the current search engines (CSE) -e.g. Google, Yahoo and Alta Vista- make image search possible only when the query is a keyword. This type of search is limited because keywords are not expressive enough to describe all important characteristics of an image. For example, an exact match request cannot be formulated in such systems and in SSI system, users should know natural language (e.g. English, French or German) used. We used XIRS (an XML image retrieval system) to set up a similarity distance between images, then to compare the request image with those in a database. An experimentation of XIRS on lung cancer diagnosis is presented. The statistics show that our system is more efficient than leading CBIR systems such as ERIC7, PEIR, PathoPic and CSE.

TL;DR: In this article, a sparse self-encoding neural network is used to generate a multimedia data operation behavior matrix according to operation behaviors of a history user group for more data in a preset multimedia database.
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention disclose a multimedia data processing method and device. The method comprises the following steps of generating a multimedia data operation behavior matrix according to operation behaviors of a history user group for more data in a preset multimedia database; computing concealed feature vectors respectively corresponding to the multimedia data and user feature vectors respectively corresponding to history users based on a sparse self-encoding neural network according to the multimedia data operation behavior matrix; and when a recommendation request corresponding to a target user is received and the history user group includes the target user, obtaining a plurality of multimedia data in personal operation behavior information of the target user and carrying out recommendation processing on the multimedia data in the personal operation behavior information according to the user feature vector corresponding to the target user and the concealed feature vectors respectively corresponding to the multimedia data in the personal operation behavior information. Through adoption of the method and the device, the recommended song can be guaranteed to be liked by the user, so that the recommendation effect is improved.

TL;DR: This work identifies a completely automatic procedure to define the metaphor that will be exploited in the construction of the VR scene, and exploits the backtracking search strategy of Prolog interpreters to solve a typical constraint satisfaction problem.
Abstract: In this paper we discuss how metaphors for supporting user interaction with multimedia databases can be automatically generated. The work presented is a further step in the development of Virgilio, a Virtual Reality (VR) based system that has been designed to be a general purpose exploration tool for highly structured data. Virgilio visualizes the results of a query to a database by generating VR scenes, that exploit appropriate metaphors in order to take advantage of common knowledge about real world objects, thus reducing the cognitive load in the process of information assimilation. We analyze two specific components of the Virgilio architecture, the Query Management Tool and the Metaphor Definition Tool, and we identify a completely automatic procedure to define the metaphor that will be exploited in the construction of the VR scene. The implementation of this procedure exploits the backtracking search strategy of Prolog interpreters to solve a typical constraint satisfaction problem.

TL;DR: A fast video retrieval algorithm that bases its search core on the statistics of object motion, which starts with extracting object motions from a shot and then transforms/quantizes them into the form of probability distributions.
Abstract: It is a very important issue to quickly retrieve semantic information from a vast multimedia database. In this paper, we propose a statistic-based algorithm to retrieve the videos that contain the requested object motion from video database. In order to speed up our algorithm, we only utilize the local motion embedded in the region-of-interest as the query to retrieve data from MPEG bitstreams. Experimental results demonstrate that our fast video retrieval algorithm is powerful in terms of accuracy and efficiency.
