TL;DR: The most generic query types are identified and general algorithmic methods to answer such queries efficiently are discussed to efficiently support similarity queries in spatial, temporal, spatio-temporal, and multimedia databases.
Abstract: This tutorial provides a comprehensive and comparative overview of general techniques to efficiently support similarity queries in spatial, temporal, spatio-temporal, and multimedia databases In particular, it identifies the most generic query types and discusses general algorithmic methods to answer such queries efficiently In addition, the tutorial sketches important applications of the introduced methods, and presents sample implementations of the general approaches within each of the aforementioned database types The intended audience of this tutorial ranges from novice researchers to advanced experts as well as practitioners from any application domain dealing with spatial, temporal, spatio-temporal, and/or multimedia data

TL;DR: The objective is to furnish a formal framework to design multimedia data streams (MMDS) schema for efficient content based information retrieval and extend the functional dependency theory and the normalization framework to handle multimediaData streams.
Abstract: Multimedia applications nowadays are becoming prevalent. In the past the relational database model was generalized to the multimedia database model. More recently the relational database model was generalized to the data streams model, as the technology advanced and data became bulky and unbounded in size due to the utilization of sensor networks. In this paper we take one more step of generalization by providing a multimedia data streams model. The objective is to furnish a formal framework to design multimedia data streams (MMDS) schema for efficient content based information retrieval. We also extend the functional dependency theory and the normalization framework to handle multimedia data streams. Finally we present algorithmic methods of generating continuous multimedia queries along with examples for illustration.

TL;DR: HIFI (ESPRIT Project 6532) creates a set of tools to allow a reader to access a large body of heterogeneous information, managed by external databases created beforehand, through a hypertext interface through a model‐based description of the hypertext application, as it appears to the reader.
Abstract: HIFI (ESPRIT Project 6532) creates a set of tools to allow a reader to access a large body of heterogeneous information, managed by external databases created beforehand, through a hypertext interface. Information currently found in information systems is based on different media and is usually managed by different tools, like relational databases and a variety of multimedia database systems. Sometimes the need arises to ‘browse’ through the information using an interactive and intuitive interface. Hypertext is probably the best current means for interactive (and possibly intuitive) navigation through a heterogeneous body of information. Available hypertext tools, however, are usually seen as being for managing their own information rather than being an interface for accessing external databases. The HIFI approach is based on a model‐based description of the hypertext application, as it appears to the reader. A declarative and/or operational mapping translates hypertext operations (search, queries and navigation) into operations on the underlying information base and also ‘materialises’ hypertext objects, using objects of the underlying databases. The system also implements methodologies to support the hypertext interface development process. Real‐life applications will be developed to show the validity of the approach, with the cooperation of important end‐users who will cooperate with the project directly, either as partners or sponsors.

TL;DR: The focus of the paper is on how to handle large raster data sets in object oriented databases, visual interaction and Internet accessible research environments.
Abstract: We present the ECHBD system as a new approach to the neuroscientific discipline of brainmapping. The complexity of the brain and the potentially vast amount of brain measurement data collected, shared, and analyzed by many different research groups make experimental brain research a key area for use of multimedia database systems in the role of environments for experimental science. The neuroscientific research community has created a demand for such a system, capable of supporting analysis of 3D images of the brain, where ease of use and visual navigation are key issues. The focus of the paper is on how to handle large raster data sets in object oriented databases, visual interaction and Internet accessible research environments.
