19 May 2003TL;DR: The experimental results show that the new proposed structure outperforms existing multi-feature string index approaches for music database retrieval and also improves the query accuracy.
Abstract: The management of large collections of music data in a multimedia database has received much attention in the past few years. In the most of current works, the researchers extract the features, such as melodies, rhythms and chords, from the music data and develop indices that will help to retrieve the relevant music quickly and improve the query accuracy. Several reports have pointed out that these features of music can be transformed and represented in the forms of music feature strings. However, these approaches lack of scalability while increasing the music data. Recently, we proposed an approach to transform the music data into a numeric forms and developed an index structure base on R-tree for effective retrieval. This numeric index approach performed more efficiently than existing string index approaches for music database retrieval. In this paper, we will extend our study to develop a multi-feature numeric index structure for music data. Our experimental results show that the new proposed structure outperforms existing multi-feature string index approaches.

TL;DR: The purpose of this study is to review current multimedia database applications in teaching and learning, and further discuss some of the issues or concerns that educators may have while incorporating multimedia data into their classrooms.
Abstract: The abundance of multimedia data and information is challenging educators to effectively search, browse, access, use, and store the data for their classroom teaching. However, many educators could still be accustomed to teaching or searching for information using conventional methods, but often the conventional methods may not function well with multimedia data. Educators need to efficiently interact and manage a variety of digital media files too. The purpose of this study is to review current multimedia database applications in teaching and learning, and further discuss some of the issues or concerns that educators may have while incorporating multimedia data into their classrooms. Some strategies and recommendations are also provided in order for educators to be able to use multimedia data more effectively in their teaching environments.

Abstract: In multimedia computer systems, the data objects created, stored, manipulated, and presented differ from the data objects used in other systems. Digitized images, sound, and video ask for new methods in data management. In this paper, the task of data management for multimedia applications is defined and clearly distinguished from other tasks like editing and complex analysis. Next, the main services are identified and described, i.e. data abstraction, representation of relationships, and search. This leads to a particular interface of multimedia database management systems that is illustrated using the Abstract Data Type IMAGE and the relational data model. The implementation of such an interface is on its way, but some issues are still open and need further research. Content-oriented search is the most important one. The paper concludes with an outlook on other research problems in the field.
