TL;DR: An efficient method to automatically extract lacunae and map deterioration from RGB images of ancient mural paintings of Bey’s Palace in Algeria is presented, supporting the work of a specialist in heritage institutions in terms of the time- and cost-consuming documentation process.
Abstract: As a result of human activity and environmental changes, several types of damages may occur to ancient mural paintings; indeed, lacunae, which refer to the area of paint layer loss, are the most prevalent kind. The presence of lacuna is an essential sign of the progress of mural painting deterioration. Most studies have focused on detecting and removing cracks from old paintings. However, lacuna extraction has not received the necessary consideration and is not well-explored. Furthermore, most recent studies have focused on using deep learning for mural protection and restoration, but deep learning requires a large amount of data and computational resources which is not always available in heritage institutions. In this paper, we present an efficient method to automatically extract lacunae and map deterioration from RGB images of ancient mural paintings of Bey’s Palace in Algeria. Firstly, a preprocessing was applied using Dark Channel Prior (DCP) to enhance the quality and improve visibility of the murals. Secondly, a determination of the training sample and pixel’s grouping was assigned to their closest sample based on Mahalanobis Distance (MD) by calculating both the mean and variance of the classes in three bands (R, G, and B), in addition to the covariance matrix of all the classes to achieve lacuna extraction of the murals. Finally, the accuracy of extraction was calculated. The experimental results showed that the proposed method can achieve a conspicuously high accuracy of 94.33% in extracting lacunae from ancient mural paintings, thus supporting the work of a specialist in heritage institutions in terms of the time- and cost-consuming documentation process.

Abstract: The “Plastic Integration Movement” took place in Mexico during the 1950s. It was characterized by efforts to incorporate mural paintings, sculpture and decoration into architecture, in order to create a Mexican expression. However, as such incorporation failed to be planned from the very conception of architectural works, many concerns and debates arose that questioned the purposes and channels of such incorporation. This movement was misunderstood and, in some cases, disapproved by both Mexican and foreign architects, but was also considered a good opportunity to express our culture and oppose to the so-called international architecture, which had modernity as a goal, but failed to incorporate domestic cultural conditions. University City is the best example of the energy of this movement. Although it was developed according to international architecture parameters, the murals added to the exterior walls of buildings, together with the gardens and exterior flooring, gave this architectural complex a clearly Mexican look, making it modern and regional at the same time. This movement was brief, but its productions deserve acknowledgement and shall be protected. That was the case of the central circuit of University City, declared in 2005 a Mexican Art Monument, and recognized in 2007 by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.

Abstract: HILE working at the Marlborough Day Hospital in London (1954-56), W the writer became acquainted with, and impressed by, the Therapeutic Social Clubs, which formed an integral part of treatment and after-care of the Day Hospital patients. There was a chain of these Therapeutic Social Clubs (T.S.C.s) located in various parts of London, controlled by the Institute of Social Psychiatry, and run by different psychiatrists of the Marlborough Day Hospital. These clubs functioned on different evenings and, owing to their diverse location, enabled the patients to choose those nearest to them, or those whose organization and character, including the psychiatrist in charge, were best suited to their individual needs. Some patients selected one, some two or more, while others attended at different clubs each day of the week. This system, owing to the density of population, and the compactness of the area, was suited to circumstances in the metropolis. It also fitted the underlying principles of the Day Hospital, which deals with out-patients only. On taking up an appointment at the Pastures Hospital, which is a mental

Abstract: This poster is oriented in the context of the muralism in the city of Chihuahua, focusing on analyze the social and cultural factors that have led to a type of official muralism in the city, with a strong institutional protection, and its unofficial counterpart that coexists with the community in the streets and parks, restaurants and cafes. The results through the interpretation of the images of the photographic ethnographic rescue, confirm not only the existence of this other mural art, but the need to include it in the universe of what is called chihuahuense muralism.
