Abstract: A frieze of mounted knights, over 15m long, dominates the nave of the church of All Saints, Claverley, Shropshire. It is part of an extensive mural scheme from the first quarter of the thirteenth century. For the first time the status of Claverley as a Royal Chapel is recognized and the royal and crusading character of the imagery is discussed. The emperors Constantine and Heraclius are identified as part of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross subject on the north wall, and the Holy Cross is suggested as the unifying theme, pre-dating the Florentine mural cycle by Agnolo Gaddi by some 170 years. Claverley is also shown to have the only medieval mural of Roland, hero of the Chanson de Roland, to survive in situ. The historical background of the early years of Henry iii is examined and the possible role of Ranulf de Blondeville, earl of Chester, in commissioning the frieze is considered.

Abstract: In 1967 the Cuban artist Wifredo Lam, then living in Europe, invited more than one hundred friends, artists, and writers, including Karel Appel, Willem de Kooning, Alexander Calder, Asger Jorn, Rene Magritte, Hans Arp, Roberto Matta, Antoni Tapies, Victor Vasarely, Pierre Soulages, and many others, to Havana to participate in an event of solidarity with the Cuban Revolution. On the night of July 17, 1967, the artists created Salon de Mayo Mural, a mural rarely seen since its inception. At Lam's suggestion, canvases were attached to a wooden grid, a spiral was drawn on the surface, and the form was divided into approximately one hundred areas for painting. The center space was saved for Lam, and field 26 (in honor of July 26—a historic date for the Cuban Revolution) was saved for Fidel Castro. The participating artists, writers, and poets created symbols, images, and cartoons, wrote poems, or simply proclaimed in bold colors, “Viva La Revolucion.”

Abstract: Educational institutions tend to have sober, simple facades, using only their official colors. Nevertheless, school murals are painted to create a more cheerful and lively atmosphere and to give a sense of identity to the people who study and work there. This article reports on and analyzes the mural works with historical figures of the elementary schools in Chihuahua city, and reflects on their importance within the institution, the possible status they may have, their educational attributes to the students, and their relationship to art history and Mexican Muralism. In addition, it presents a brief interpretation of the most important elements of the different murals presented here.

Abstract: The surface quality of murals degraded seriously after long-term contamination. The existing cleaning methods are challenging to remove these contaminants without damaging the mural surface. The objective of this study was to eliminate the contaminants on the surface of murals by nanosecond pulsed laser irradiation. We adopted the apparatus of the Nd: YAG laser with a Q-switch (wavelengths λ = 355 nm and 1064 nm) to study the cleaning characteristic of the mural. The time-resolved imaging of the laser interaction process between contaminants and mural surfaces was visualized through pump–probe detection technology to elucidate cleaning mechanisms. Results showed that laser cleaning was suitable for cleaning the soot and dust contaminants on the surface of white lime, but it generated irreversible damage to the surface when eliminating these contaminants on the pigment layer. The control method of damage suppression and the safe range of laser parameters for different surface materials was obtained by investigating acoustic wave propagation and statistics of ejecting particles. The element analysis was carried out by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, which indicated that laser irradiation did not affect the chemical characteristics of the mural surface. This investigation provides a comprehensive understanding of laser cleaning, which is significant to developing cultural heritage protection technology.
