TL;DR: The thermal behavior of Nafion-117 membranes was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).
Abstract: The thermal behavior of Nafion-117 membranes was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). TG measurements revealed that the mechanism of thermal degradation of a Nafion membrane in the acid form is different from that of Nafion in the sodium form. The DSC curves for the first heating, for both acid and salt forms, display two endothermic peaks, near 120 and 230°C. The high-temperature peak was assigned to the crystalline domains melting in Nafion, and the low-temperature peak was attributed to a transition into ionic clusters, since this transition exhibits significant changes depending on the nature of the counterion and the degree of hydration.

TL;DR: In this article, a study of proton conductivity in a commercial sample of Nation® 117 and a structurally similar bis[(perfluoroalkyl)sulfonyl]imide ionomer membrane under variable temperature and humidity conditions is reported.
Abstract: A study of proton conductivity in a commercial sample of Nation® 117 and a structurally similar bis[(perfluoroalkyl)sulfonyl]imide ionomer membrane under variable temperature and humidity conditions is reported. The sulfonyl imide ionomer was synthesized using a novel redox‐initiated emulsion copolymerization method, and conductivities were measured using a galvanostatic four‐point‐probe electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique. Both materials exhibited a strong dependence of conductivity on temperature and humidity, with conductivity in both cases being strongly diminished with decreasing humidity (at constant temperature) and increasing temperature (at constant water partial pressure). The observed behavior is consistent with a "liquid‐like" mechanism of proton conductivity whereby protons are transported as hydrated hydronium ions through water‐filled pores and channels in the ionomer.

TL;DR: Of great interest is the fact that the compound exhibits high proton conductivity with a low activation energy that is comparable to those of Nafion presently used in fuel cells.
Abstract: A novel metal–organic framework, [{(Zn0.25)8(O)}Zn6(L)12(H2O)29(DMF)69(NO3)2]n (1) {H2L = 1,3-bis(4-carboxyphenyl)imidazolium}, has been synthesized under solvothermal conditions in good yield. It shows a Zn8O cluster that is coordinated to six ligands and forms an overall three-dimensional structure with channels along the crystallographic a and b axes. The imidazolium groups of the ligand moiety are aligned in the channels. The channels are not empty but are occupied by a large number of DMF and water molecules. Upon heating, these solvent molecules can be removed without breakdown of the overall structure of the framework as shown by variable-temperature powder X-ray diffraction patterns. Of great interest is the fact that the compound exhibits high proton conductivity with a low activation energy that is comparable to those of Nafion presently used in fuel cells.

TL;DR: In this paper, a sputter deposition of platinum on the surface of Nafion 117 membranes was used to produce a spike in the sputtered film microstructure at the nanometer thickness level and a broad plateau was observed where the performance is insensitive to the amount of sputtered platinum.
