TL;DR: In this article, a legacy of geographical research on the political causes and consequences of disaster is reviewed and built on to formulate a framework for the analysis of post-disaster political space.
Abstract: Calls from the climate change community and a more widespread concern for human security have reawakened the interest of geographers and others in disaster politics. A legacy of geographical research on the political causes and consequences of disaster is reviewed and built on to formulate a framework for the analysis of post-disaster political space. This is constructed around the notion of a contested social contract. The Marmara earthquake, Turkey, is used to illustrate the framework and provide empirical detail on the multiple scales and time phasing of post-disaster political change. Priorities for a future research agenda in disaster politics are proposed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate whether experiencing a natural disaster affects risk-taking behavior and find that individuals who recently suffered a flood or earthquake exhibit more risk-aversion, and conclude that this change in perception of background risk causes people to take fewer risks.
Abstract: We investigate whether experiencing a natural disaster affects risk-taking behavior. We conduct standard risk games (using real money) with randomly selected individuals in rural Indonesia. We find that individuals who recently suffered a flood or earthquake exhibit more risk-aversion. Experiencing a natural disaster causes people to perceive that they now face a greater risk of a future disaster. We conclude that this change in perception of background risk causes people to take fewer risks. We provide evidence that experimental risk behavior is correlated with real-life risk behavior, highlighting the importance of our results.

TL;DR: In this article, a detailed case study of the tsunami was carried out to identify specific problems associated with managing natural disasters in Thailand, including prediction, warning, mitigation and preparedness, unspecified responsible governmental authority, unclear line of authority, ineffective collaboration among institutions in different levels, lack of encouragement for participation of local and international NGOs and lack of e...
Abstract: Purpose – With an aim to develop an integrated approach for effectively managing natural disasters, this paper has three research objectives. First, it provides a framework for effective natural disaster management from a public project management perspective. Second, it proposes an integrated approach for successfully and effectively managing disaster crisis. Third, it specifies a set of critical success factors for managing disaster related public projects.Design/methodology/approach – A detailed case study of the tsunami was carried out to identify specific problems associated with managing natural disaster in Thailand.Findings – The investigations reveal that the country lacked a master plan for natural disaster management including prediction, warning, mitigation and preparedness, unspecified responsible governmental authority, unclear line of authority, ineffective collaboration among institutions in different levels, lack of encouragement for participation of local and international NGOs, lack of e...

TL;DR: The authors found that the 2004 tsunami led to substantial long-lasting increases in risk aversion, prosocial behavior, and impatience, and that both community-level and individual-level experiences appear to affect preferences in theoretically plausible ways.
