TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a method to obtain a cheap and nonharmful filler, having flame-retarding properties and providing a molded item of small specific gravity, by mixing boron compounds with fiber at a specific blending ratio.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled cheap and nonharmful filler, having flame-retarding properties and providing a molded item of small specific gravity, by mixing boron compounds with fiber at a specific blending ratio. CONSTITUTION:5-250pts.wt. Boron compound such as calcium borate, magnesium borate or aluminum borate is added to and mixed with 100pts.wt. fiber obtained by crushing or disintegrating pulp sheets, waste newspapers, etc. or natural fiber such as cotton, hemp, etc., and preferably an adhesive is further added to and mixed with them. Thereafter, the mixture is dried to obtain an intended filler for resins. The boron compounds of bivalent or higher metals are preferable for the above- mentioned use and, among those, boron compounds containing at least one element of calcium, magnesium and aluminum are preferable, and they give resin products having improved electric insulating resistance, bending strength and impact strength, and a reduced molding time as compared with other boron compounds.
