Abstract: We draw attention on a particular configuration of supersymmetric particle masses, motivated by naturalness and flavour considerations. All its relevant phenomenological properties for the LHC are described in terms of a few physical parameters, irrespective of the underlying theoretical model. This allows a simple characterization of its main features, useful to define a strategy for its discovery.

Abstract: We reexamine the proposal that the resolution of the cosmological constant problem involves a submillimeter breakdown of the point-particle approximation for gravitons. No fundamental description of such a breakdown, which simultaneously preserves the point-particle nature of matter particles, is yet known. However, basic aspects of the self-consistency of the idea, such as the preservation of the macroscopic equivalence principle while satisfying the quantum naturalness of the cosmological constant, are addressed in this paper within a soft graviton effective theory. It builds on Weinberg's analysis of soft graviton couplings and standard heavy particle effective theory, and minimally encompasses the experimental regime of soft gravity coupled to hard matter. A qualitatively distinct signature for short-distance tests of gravity is discussed, bounded by naturalness to appear above approximately $20\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m}.$

Abstract: This article aims to determine the process underlying the subjective impression about the fidelity of reproduced object colors. To this end, we present the concept of the naturalness constraint and a framework for specification of naturalness judgments. We consider several research questions that are essential for this framework and discuss plausible answers supported by experiments. In general, naturalness assessment of reproduced object colors can be (1) defined as similarity to prototypical object colors, and (2) characterized by a probability density function (e.g., Gaussian). Experiments show that (3) there is a considerable amount of consistency in naturalness judgments of locally and globally processed images (although observers are slightly more tolerant of global image processing), and (4) naturalness judgments vary for different object categories; e.g., subjects are more consistent in naturalness judgments of skin, grass, and sky reproductions than shirt reproduction. We suggest that (5) naturalness of a whole picture is determined by the naturalness of the most critical object in that picture. Finally, we introduce a naturalness index predicting perceived naturalness of color reproduction of real-life scenes. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Col Res Appl, 24, 52–67, 1999

Abstract: The universality of design perception and response is tested using data collected from 10 countries: Argentina, Australia, China, Germany, Great Britain, India, The Netherlands, Russia, Singapore, and the United States. A Bayesian, finite-mixture, structural equation model is developed that identifies latent logo clusters while accounting for heterogeneity in evaluations. The concomitant variable approach allows cluster probabilities to be country specific. Rather than a priori defined clusters, our procedure provides a posteriori cross-national logo clusters based on consumer response similarity. Our model reduces the 10 countries to three cross-national clusters that respond differently to logo design dimensions: the West, Asia, and Russia. The dimensions underlying design are found to be similar across countries, suggesting that elaborateness, naturalness, and harmony are universal design dimensions. Responses affect, shared meaning, subjective familiarity, and true and false recognition to logo design dimensions elaborateness, naturalness, and harmony and elements repetition, proportion, and parallelism are also relatively consistent, although we find minor differences across clusters. Our results suggest that managers can implement a global logo strategy, but they also can optimize logos for specific countries if desired.

Abstract: The right-handed neutrinos within the type-I seesaw mechanism can induce large radiative corrections to the Higgs mass, and naturalness arguments can then be used to set limits on their mass scale and Yukawa couplings. Driven by minimality, we consider the presence of two degenerate right-handed neutrinos. We compare the limits from naturalness with the ones from the stability of the electroweak vacuum and from lepton flavor violation. Implications from neutrinoless double beta decay are also discussed and renormalization effects for the light neutrino parameters are presented. Adding small perturbations to the degenerate heavy neutrino spectrum allows for successful leptogenesis.
