Web-based intranet services and network management

Abstract: Intranets are composed of a network of various devices, systems, and services supporting a wide variety of applications within an organization. Providing a secure, reliable, and efficient operating environment to support the organization's daily activities and its business is the most challenging task faced by operations and management staff today. Current management practices typically involve the use of separate, incompatible tools and techniques for managing networks, systems, and applications. What is needed desperately is a simple, uniform framework for managing not only networks but also systems and applications. Web-based management is a promising approach that can provide a truly integrated management solution. This article examines the key emerging technologies involved in Web-based management. The authors present an integrated architecture that can be used to manage all the networking and computing resources in an Intranet. Also presented are several specific examples where Web technology has been applied in managing different target resources for validating the architecture.

Optimal placement of controllers in a resilient SDN architecture

Abstract: The SDN (Software Defined Networking) paradigm brings flexibility to the network management and is an enabler to reduce the energy consumption of the networks. However deploying a set of SDN controllers to manage a Wide Area Network is still a challenge as it implies to determine the right number of controllers to install and their locations within the network. In this paper, we give the key performance criteria that should be taken into account to provide a “good” placement in terms of Quality of Service and we propose an integer linear programming formulation of the resilient controller placement problem. This formulation provides the optimal number of controllers and their location while embedding QoS and load balancing constraints for several level of backup controllers.

Data, information and knowledge in regional innovation networks: Quality considerations and brokerage functions

Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this article is to investigate data, information and knowledge in regional innovation networks. Emphasis has been put recently on regional innovation systems, where various actors are involved in innovative processes. The article responds to the need to study matters related to knowledge management and information quality in such environments.Design/methodology/approach – Regional innovation networks and data, information and knowledge as well as research on them are discussed at a theoretical level. An existing innovation network of the Lahti region, Finland, was utilised as a pilot environment when building the knowledge management framework that is introduced. The framework is based on established knowledge management literature and practice.Findings – The results confirm that the aspects of data, information and knowledge need to be addressed systematically in regional innovation networks. Abstract: We describe a 3D computer network optimisation tool, the tool comprising: an input to receive network management data from a database, said network management data including one or more of: network device data including hardware identification data for hardware network devices of said network and/or interface data characterising one or more interfaces of a said network device and/or firmware identification data for a said network device and/or operating system identification data for a said network device; information flow data relating to information flow within said network said information data including network device information flow load data and/or link bandwidth data and/or statistical information flow data; environmental data relating to a said network device including temperature data and/or electrical power or energy consumption data and/or physical network device location data; captured network data and/or sniffer data from one or more communication links of said network; and connectivity data defining connectivity of said network devices; a three-dimensional (3D) visualisation module to construct a 3D representation of said network; and an output to output data defining said 3D representation of said network, wherein said 3D representation includes 3D representations of said network devices in conjunction with a representation of said connectivity in three dimensions.
