TL;DR: A comprehensive introduction to network-management standards, including SNMP itself, secure SNMP, and SNMPv2, and an important enhancement of SNMP known as RMON (remote monitoring) is also presented.
Abstract: A comprehensive introduction to network-management standards. Part I is a survey of network-management technology and techniques. Part II presents the SNMP family of standards, including SNMP itself, secure SNMP, and SNMPv2. An important enhancement of SNMP, known as RMON (remote monitoring) is also

TL;DR: In this article, a method and apparatus for managing a computer network is described, where a manager software system is installed on a network management computer system within the network, and one agent software system, installed on each of the server computer systems in the network.
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for managing a computer network. A manager software system is installed on a network management computer system within the network, and one agent software system is installed on each of the server computer systems in the network. A knowledge module in the form of a text fie is stored on the network manager computer system so that the manager software system can transmit knowledge to the various agent software systems throughout the network, for use by the agents in monitoring and managing the server on which they are installed. Interpretable script language programs are present on all computers in the network, expanding and customizing the functionality of the agent software systems. A method is disclosed for using the high level interpretable script language programs in connection with the agent software systems for discovering resources on the network, monitoring aspects of resources, and taking recovery actions automatically in the event of an alarm condition.

TL;DR: An overview of the emerging field of intelligent agents (IAs) by identifying their basic properties and looking at their potential impacts on open service architectures, intelligent communications and network management.
Abstract: The telecommunications environment is changing its face towards an open market of information services where the vision is "information any time, at any place, in any form". Within this electronic market the aspects of service customization and instant service provision are of fundamental importance. In this context a new paradigm is gaining momentum referred to as "intelligent agents". This paper provides an overview of the emerging field of intelligent agents (IAs) by identifying their basic properties. Focusing on mobile agents, which could be considered as a specific class of intelligent agents, we identify the chances of agent technology in the context of telecommunications. We look at their potential impacts on open service architectures, intelligent communications and network management.

TL;DR: A new methodology of dynamic syslog mining is proposed in order to detect failure symptoms with higher confidence and to discover sequential alarm patterns among computer devices.
Abstract: Syslog monitoring technologies have recently received vast attentions in the areas of network management and network monitoring They are used to address a wide range of important issues including network failure symptom detection and event correlation discovery Syslogs are intrinsically dynamic in the sense that they form a time series and that their behavior may change over time This paper proposes a new methodology of dynamic syslog mining in order to detect failure symptoms with higher confidence and to discover sequential alarm patterns among computer devices The key ideas of dynamic syslog mining are 1) to represent syslog behavior using a mixture of Hidden Markov Models, 2) to adaptively learn the model using an on-line discounting learning algorithm in combination with dynamic selection of the optimal number of mixture components, and 3) to give anomaly scores using universal test statistics with a dynamically optimized threshold Using real syslog data we demonstrate the validity of our methodology in the scenarios of failure symptom detection, emerging pattern identification, and correlation discovery

TL;DR: In this article, a test protocol is defined between two endpoint nodes on the network and the endpoint node pair executes the test protocol and measures the performance of the network connection between the two nodes without requiring any involvement of application software.
Abstract: Methods, systems and computer program products are provided which test network performance by defining test schedules including test protocols to be implemented and when the protocols should be executed for a plurality of defined connections on a network. A connection may be defined between two endpoint nodes on the network. At times specified in the test schedule, the endpoint node pair executes the test protocol and measures the performance of the network connection between the two nodes without requiring any involvement of application software which may or may not be installed on the computer hardware supporting the endpoint node. The test protocol may define the type of network layer protocol to utilize (for example, TCP), and the test script or scripts to be communicated using the appropriate stack on the computer hardware supporting the endpoint node. The schedule may be provided with an expiration date and a console node is provided for distribution of test schedules, monitoring of availability of endpoint nodes and receipt of measured performance measurements for reporting to a network manager. In further aspects of the present invention, auto-thresholding and coordination of interrelated but asynchronous tasks executing at the console node are provided.
