TL;DR: In this paper, a method and apparatus for the distributed monitoring of network traffic deploys end system agents to collect traffic statistics at distributed points in the network, which are forwarded to collectors which compile the statistics to create higher level pictures of network performance.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the distributed monitoring of network traffic deploys end system agents to collect traffic statistics at distributed points in the network. These statistics are forwarded to collectors which compile the statistics to create higher level pictures of network performance. A collector may act as a proxy for a prior art standalone network probe and may interact with network management software as though it were a standalone network probe. The invention is designed to work in accordance with a variety of standard network management protocols including SNMP, RMON, and RMON2 but is not limited to those environments.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose a network management method where a service management equipment holds the mapping of services and virtual networks as management information, and a managed server sends an advice to a VLAN management equipment when its status changes; the VLAN manager receives the advice and refers to the information contained in the advice to identify the managed server and the connection port of a network switch.
Abstract: The invention relates to a network management method wherein: a service management equipment holds the mapping of services and virtual networks as management information; a managed server sends an advice to a VLAN management equipment when its status changes; and the VLAN management equipment receives the advice and refers to the information contained in the advice to thereby identify the managed server and the connection port of a network switch, and configures a virtual network belonging to the identified port of the network switch. The method alleviates the task of reconfiguration associated with the adding or deleting of servers.

TL;DR: This paper analyzes how to overcome problems by new design paradigms and technologies encompassing the capability to relocate dynamically the components of a distributed application by evaluating the opportunities offered and providing feasibility considerations.
Abstract: Network management is gaining increasing importance due to the pervasiveness of computer networks. Nevertheless, mainstream approaches to network management are presently limited by centralized management strategies and poor flexibility—a consequence of their rigid client-server architecture. In this paper we analyze how to overcome these problems by new design paradigms and technologies encompassing the capability to relocate dynamically the components of a distributed application. We evaluate the opportunities offered by this approach and provide feasibility considerations, also discussing a few interim architectural solutions adopted in our on-going implementation work.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a network management architecture for data exchange networks, in which various resources such as hubs, routers, etc., distributed across the data exchange network are remotely controlled from a single point of maintenance.
Abstract: In a data exchange network, in which various resources, such as hubs, routers, etc., distributed across the data exchange network are remotely controlled from a single point of maintenance, a consistent approach is provided for managing the network hardware resources. A set of consistent displays is provided for remote front panels allowing visual management of remote, heterogeneous devices, while also allowing the display of nongraphical data in a usable form. A common user interface allows operator control of the network, which may include many disparate types of equipment, supplied by various manufacturers. User definition of each network element is allowed based on a uniform vocabulary of element representations. A network management architecture provides a common development language for describing specific functions and attributes of network elements. Each element includes a protocol module which, in conjunction with a system engine, effects coordinated network control.
