Abstract: Network-on-chip designs promise to offer considerable advantages over the traditional bus-based designs in solving the numerous technological, economic and productivity problems associated with billion-transistor system-on-chip development. The authors believe that different types of networks will be required, depending on the application domain. Therefore, a very flexible network design is proposed that is highly scalable, and can be easily changed to accomodate various needs. A network-on-chip design, realised as part of the platform that the authors are developing for reconfigurable systems, is presented. This design is suitable for building networks with irregular topologies, and with low latency and high throughput.

Abstract: The multi-commodity network flow problem is an important sub-problem in several heuristics and exact methods for designing route networks for container ships. The sub-problem decides how cargoes should be transported through the network provided by shipping routes. This paper studies the multi-commodity network flow problem with transit time constraints which puts limits on the duration of the transit of the commodities through the network. It is shown that for the particular application it does not increase the solution time to include the transit time constraints and that including the transit time is essential to offer customers a competitive product.

Abstract: With the projected growth in demand for bandwidth and telecommunication services will come the requirement for a multiservice backbone network of far greater efficiency, capacity, and flexibility than ISDN (integrated-services digital network) is able to satisfy. This class of network has been termed the broadband ISDN, and the design of the switching nodes of such a network is the subject of much research. The author investigates one possible solution. The design and performance, for multiservice traffic, is presented for a fast packet switch based on a nonbuffered, multistage interconnection network. It is shown that for an implementation in current CMOS technology, operating at 50 MHz, switches with a total traffic capacity of up to 150 Gb/s can be constructed. Furthermore, if the reserved service traffic load is limited on each input port to a maximum of 80% of switch port saturation, then a maximum delay across the switch of on the order of 100 mu s can be guaranteed, for 99% of the reserved service traffic, regardless of the unreserved service traffic load. >

Abstract: Energy-efficient wireless communication network design is an important and challenging problem. Its difficulty lies in the fact that the overall performance depends, in a coupled way, on the following subsystems: antenna, power amplifier, modulation, error control coding, and network protocols. In addition, given an energy constraint, improved operation of one of the aforementioned subsystems may not yield better overall performance. Thus, to optimize performance one must account for the coupling among the above subsystems and simultaneously optimize their operation under an energy constraint. In this article we present a generic integrated design methodology that is suitable for many kinds of mobile systems and achieves global optimization under an energy constraint. By pointing out some important connections among different layers in the design procedure, we explain why our integrated design methodology is better than traditional design methodologies. We present numerical results of the application of our design methodology to a situational awareness scenario in a mobile wireless network with different mobility models. These results illustrate the improvement in performance that our integrated design methodology achieves over traditional design methodologies, and the tradeoff between energy consumption and performance.
