TL;DR: In this paper, a coupled and iterative sequential source identification and dynamic monitoring network design framework is developed, which provides a framework for necessary sequential exchange of information between monitoring network and source identification methodology.
Abstract: The identification of unknown pollution sources is a prerequisite for designing of a remediation strategy. In most of the real world situations, it is difficult to identify the pollution sources without a scientifically designed efficient monitoring network. The locations of the contaminant concentration measurement sites would determine the efficiency of the unknown source identification process to a large extent. Therefore coupled and iterative sequential source identification and dynamic monitoring network design framework is developed. The coupled approach provides a framework for necessary sequential exchange of information between monitoring network and source identification methodology. The preliminary identification of unknown sources, based on limited concentration data from existing arbitrarily located wells provides the initial rough estimate of the source fluxes. These identified source fluxes are then utilized for designing an optimal monitoring network for the first stage. Both the monitoring network and source identification process is repeated by sequential identification of sources and design of monitoring network which provides the feedback information. In the optimal source identification model, the Jacobian matrix which is the determinant for the search direction in the nonlinear optimization model links the groundwater flow-transport simulator and the optimization method. For the optimal monitoring network design, the integer programming based optimal design model requires as input, simulated sets of concentration data. In the proposed methodology, the concentration measurement data from the designed and implemented monitoring network are used as feedback information for sequential identification of unknown pollution sources. The potential applicability of the developed methodology is demonstrated for an illustrative study area.

TL;DR: In this article, a dedicated EA (EA) is proposed to solve the secondary distribution network planning problem, which uses a codification scheme, genetic operators, and control parameters, projected and managed to consider the specific characteristics of the secondary network planning.
Abstract: In this work, the planning of secondary distribution circuits is approached as a mixed integer nonlinear programming problem (MINLP). In order to solve this problem, a dedicated evolutionary algorithm (EA) is proposed. This algorithm uses a codification scheme, genetic operators, and control parameters, projected and managed to consider the specific characteristics of the secondary network planning. The codification scheme maps the possible solutions that satisfy the requirements in order to obtain an effective and low-cost projected system-the conductors' adequate dimensioning, load balancing among phases, and the transformer placed at the center of the secondary system loads. An effective algorithm for three-phase power flow is used as an auxiliary methodology of the EA for the calculation of the fitness function proposed for solutions of each topology. Results for two secondary distribution circuits are presented, whereas one presents radial topology and the other a weakly meshed topology.

TL;DR: A new advanced strategic planning model with integrated queueing relationships is built that explicitly takes into account stochastic delays due to various processes like collection, production and transportation, as well as disturbances due toVarious sources of variability like uncertain supply, uncertain process times, unknown quality, breakdowns, etc.
Abstract: Localising facilities and assigning product flows in a reverse logistics environment is a crucial but difficult strategic management decision, certainly when value decay plays an important part. Despite numerous publications regarding closed-loop supply chain design, very few addressed the impact of lead times and the high level of uncertainty in reverse processes. In this article, a single product reverse logistics network design problem with multiple layers and multiple routings is considered. To this end, a new advanced strategic planning model with integrated queueing relationships is built that explicitly takes into account stochastic delays due to various processes like collection, production and transportation, as well as disturbances due to various sources of variability like uncertain supply, uncertain process times, unknown quality, breakdowns, etc. Their impact is measured by transforming these delays into work-in-process, which affects profit through inventory costs. This innovative modeling a...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a case study that shows how an online hydraulic simulation system can give timely warning of changes from normal network operation, providing capacity to minimise customer impact.
Abstract: . Hydraulic simulation models of water distribution networks are routinely used for operational investigations and network design purposes. However, their full potential is often never realised because, in the majority of cases, they have been calibrated with data collected manually from the field during a single historic time period and, as such, reflect the network operational conditions that were prevalent at that time, and they are then applied as part of a reactive, desktop investigation. In order to use a hydraulic model to assist proactive distribution network management its element asset information must be up to date and it should be able to access current network information to drive simulations. Historically this advance has been restricted by the high cost of collecting and transferring the necessary field measurements. However, recent innovation and cost reductions associated with data transfer is resulting in collection of data from increasing numbers of sensors in water supply systems, and automatic transfer of the data to point of use. This means engineers potentially have access to a constant stream of current network data that enables a new era of "on-line" modelling that can be used to continually assess standards of service compliance for pressure and reduce the impact of network events, such as mains bursts, on customers. A case study is presented here that shows how an online modelling system can give timely warning of changes from normal network operation, providing capacity to minimise customer impact.
