Abstract: Economic network theory emphasises the importance of external resource mobilisation. In this paper, the relations between the mobilisation and use of internal and external resources in innovation processes, and the innovative performance of firms, are explored empirically, using an adapted version of Hakansson's (1987) economic network model. The main research question was: to what extent do network variables contribute to the innovative performance of firms? To answer this question, we assessed the explanatory power of economic network theory within the empirical study of innovation. Firms were found to engage in various configurations of internal and external resource bases, enabling them to innovate with better results. The relations in the estimated models are strongly influenced by moderating variables such as sector, and type and level of innovations produced. Our main conclusion is that models that include both internal and external resources explain the innovative performance better than models in which only internal resources are used.

Abstract: The concept of a network theory proposed in this paper provides a basis for systematically addressing questions concerning the design and operation of integrated processes. The route to a problem solution is characterised by the following steps. Modular process structuring takes place on hierarchically ordered levels by coupling of components and linkage elements. The process module are coupled mass- and energy-wise by means of opposing potential and current vectors. The linkage which is coupled one-sidedly and is hence reaction-free is a special case. Process modelling utilises modular process structuring and assigns the structural modules to behaviour-describing modules. Process analysis examines structural properties (stability, controllability, observability, sensitivity) and nonlinear phenomena (ignition and extinction; boundary cycles, waves, chaos) of the overall process behaviour. Process design considers the layout and control of processes from holistic vantage points and aims at optimum determination of the nature, number, and coupling of all the components and linkage elements of an integrated process in the light of a given production goal.

Abstract: Discrete tomography is the problem of reconstructing a binary image defined on a discrete lattice of points from its projections at only a few angles. It has applications in X-ray crystallography, in which the projections are the number of atoms in the crystal along a given line, and nondestructive testing. The 2-D version of this problem is fairly well understood, and several algorithms for solving it are known, most of which involve discrete mathematics or network theory. However, the 3-D problem is much harder to solve. This paper shows how the problem can be recast in a purely algebraic form. This results in: (1) new insight into the number of projection angles needed for an almost surely unique solution; (2) non-obvious dependencies in projection data; and (3) new algorithms for solving.

Abstract: The null-balance method of output indication is widely used in instrumentation techniques and sensor applications. Yet, the theorems and methods of general circuit theory that are the basis of the null-circuit analysis and design have nearly disappeared from the modern books on network theory. In this paper the elements of general theory of null-balance circuits are presented. The relationships between two-port parameters of passive null-balance circuits are described, and the applications are demonstrated using bridge circuits. The systematic calculation of null-balance circuit sensitivity is given, and this procedure shows the importance of the theory of autonomous two-ports and the compensation theorems in the theory of null-balance circuits.

Abstract: Perspectives of temporality in networks in business marketing is analysed in this conceptual paper. Core foundations of business network theory are analysed taking especially time and timing into consideration. A model of event-based networks is developed in grasping the temporal nature of business networks. The findings suggest extensions of network theory, methods and models using events as a promising but complex avenue for research.
