Abstract: Supply chain integration, social network research, and network theories have proliferated over the last 10 years in supply chain research. Network theories provide a broad base for understanding how firms, functions, and teams work together but at the foundation of all networks are individuals and their connections (ties). This research elaborates on supply chain integration through the lens of network theory, focusing on frontline individuals’ decision‐making and behaviors as the foundation for understanding cross‐functional integration and firm‐level outcomes. Two studies, utilizing social network and inductive qualitative methods drawing on grounded theory and ethnography, show that the execution of marketing and supply chain strategies is dependent on the empowerment and integration of a manufacturer's frontline employees in retail supply chains. Empowerment is found to be the result of a network of multiple relationships. Tension mounts when frontline employees are disconnected from cross‐functional management sources in their organization and instead turn to each other to solve problems that arise in their retail channels. The results highlight the importance of relational embeddedness and empowerment in affecting internal supply chain integration.

Abstract: In this article, we present a game theory based framework, named games network, for modeling biological interactions. After introducing the theory, we more precisely describe the methodology to model biological interactions. Then we apply it to the plasminogen activator system (PAs) which is a signal transduction pathway involved in cancer cell migration. The games network theory extends game theory by including the locality of interactions. Each game in a games network represents local interactions between biological agents. The PAs system is implicated in cytoskeleton modifications via regulation of actin and microtubules, which in turn favors cell migration. The games network model has enabled us a better understanding of the regulation involved in the PAs system.

Abstract: Citation networks are a cornerstone of network research and have been important to the general development of network theory. Citation data have the advantage of constituting a well-defined set where the nature of nodes and edges is reasonably well specified. Much interesting and important work has been done in this vein, with respect to not only academic but also judicial citation networks. For example, previous scholarship focuses upon broad citation patterns, the evolution of precedent, and time-varying change in the likelihood that communities of cases will be cited. As research of judicial citation and semantic networks transitions from a strict focus on the structural characteristics of these networks to the evolutionary dynamics behind their growth, it becomes even more important to develop theoretically coherent and empirically grounded ideas about the nature of edges and nodes. In this paper, we move in this direction on several fronts. We compare several network representations of the corpus of United States Supreme Court decisions (1791-2005). This corpus is not only of seminal importance, but also represents a highly structured and largely self-contained body of case law. As constructed herein, nodes represent whole cases or individual 'opinion units' within cases. Edges represent either citations or semantic connections. As our broader goal is to better understand American common law development, we are particularly interested in the union, intersect and compliment of these various citation networks as they offer potential insight into the long-standing question of whether 'law is a seamless web'? We believe the characterization of law’s interconnectedness is an empirical question well suited to the tools of computer science and applied graph theory. While much work still remains, the analysis provided herein is designed to advance the broader cause.

Abstract: In order to improve the management and to better locate water losses, Water Distribution Networks can be physically divided into District Meter Areas (DMAs), inserting hydraulic devices on proper pipes and thus simplifying the control of water budget and pressure regime. Traditionally, the water network division is based on empirical suggestions and on ‘trial and error’ approaches, checking results step by step through hydraulic simulation, and so making it very difficult to apply such approaches to large networks. Recently, some heuristic procedures, based on graph and network theory, have shown that it is possible to automatically identify optimal solutions in terms of number, shape and dimension of DMAs. In this paper, weighted spectral clustering methods have been used to define the optimal layout of districts in a real water distribution system, taking into account both geometric and hydraulic features, through weighted adjacency matrices. The obtained results confirm the feasibility of the use of spectral clustering to address the arduous problem of water supply network partitioning with an elegant mathematical approach compared to other heuristic procedures proposed in the literature. A comparison between different spectral clustering solutions has been carried out through topological and energy performance indices, in order to identify the optimal water network partitioning procedure.

Abstract: Betweenness centrality is an important centrality measure widely used in social network analysis, route planning etc. However, even for mid-size networks, it is practically intractable to compute exact betweenness scores. In this paper, we propose a generic randomized framework for unbiased approximation of betweenness centrality. The proposed framework can be adapted with different sampling techniques and give diverse methods. We discuss the conditions a promising sampling technique should satisfy to minimize the approximation error and present a sampling method partially satisfying the conditions. We perform extensive experiments and show the high efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method.
