TL;DR: This book focuses on network information flow with fidelity, covering both lossless and lossy source reconstruction, and is illustrated throughout with real-world applications, including sensor networks and multimedia communications.
Abstract: An introduction to the theory and techniques for achieving high quality network communication with the best possible bandwidth economy, this book focuses on network information flow with fidelity. Covering both lossless and lossy source reconstruction, it is illustrated throughout with real-world applications, including sensor networks and multimedia communications. Practical algorithms are presented, developing novel techniques for tackling design problems in joint network-source coding via collaborative multiple description coding, progressive coding, diversity routing and network coding. With systematic introductions to the basic theories of distributed source coding, network coding and multiple description coding, this is an ideal self-contained resource for researchers and students in information theory and network theory.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors study and characterize the interdependency structure of the Mexican Stock Exchange (mainly stocks from BMV) in the period 2000-2019 and provide visualizations which in a one shot provide a big-picture panorama.
Abstract: Our goal in this paper is to study and characterize the interdependency structure of the Mexican Stock Exchange (mainly stocks from BMV) in the period 2000-2019 and provide visualizations which in a one shot provide a big-picture panorama. To this end, we estimate correlation/concentration matrices from different models and then compute metrics from network theory including eigencentralities and network modularity

TL;DR: This article proposed to represent textual data as a directed, weighted network by the text2net algorithm and explore how various fast, network-topological metrics, such as network community structure, can be used for cross-lingual comparisons.
Abstract: Modeling relations between languages can offer understanding of language characteristics and uncover similarities and differences between languages. Automated methods applied to large textual corpora can be seen as opportunities for novel statistical studies of language development over time, as well as for improving cross-lingual natural language processing techniques. In this work, we first propose how to represent textual data as a directed, weighted network by the text2net algorithm. We next explore how various fast, network-topological metrics, such as network community structure, can be used for cross-lingual comparisons. In our experiments, we employ eight different network topology metrics, and empirically showcase on a parallel corpus, how the methods can be used for modeling the relations between nine selected languages. We demonstrate that the proposed method scales to large corpora consisting of hundreds of thousands of aligned sentences on an of-the-shelf laptop. We observe that on the one hand properties such as communities, capture some of the known differences between the languages, while others can be seen as novel opportunities for linguistic studies.

TL;DR: In this article, the concept of modularity is discussed and applied to the Afrikaans film industry in order to investigate how modularity can inform us about the structure of this industry, using the Blondel et al. algorithm.
Abstract: Network theory has become an indispensable theoretical framework for the study of complex systems, and significant advances have been made within the community of physicists who study network topology. One problem, however, is that applications have been less extensive than theoretical and algorithmic developments, and in this article, the concept of modularity is discussed and applied to the Afrikaans film industry in order to investigate how modularity can inform us about the structure of this industry. By constructing a network of everyone involved in all the Afrikaans films released between 1994 and 2014, modularity is calculated, using the Blondel et al. algorithm. And it is illustrated that some directors tend to use similar groups of people in their films, but it is also indicated that other directors use more diverse sets of people. Suggestions are made as well for further research.

TL;DR: In this paper, an urban road network association planning method based on a complex network sandpile model is proposed, in which the traffic dispersion capacity of roads and dynamic factors playing a correlation role in congestion are considered and the factors are reasonably considered into the correlation model through normalization and other operations.
Abstract: The invention discloses an urban road network mechanism association planning method based on a complex network sandpile model. According to the method, a sandpile avalanche model in combination with acomplex network theory is provided, the congestion distribution situation of an urban traffic network is analyzed, the congestion action mechanism between traffic roads is known, and defects existingin the urban road design and planning process are found. According to the method, an urban road network mechanism correlation model is established, the traffic dispersion capacity of roads and dynamic factors playing a correlation role in congestion are considered, and the factors are reasonably considered into the correlation model through normalization and other operations; an evolution mechanism process of an urban road is simulated through system simulation, and an evolution propagation process of congestion after urban road congestion is presented by means of an analysis process of a sandpile model in a complex network theory, so that the rationality of design and planning of the whole urban road network is integrally understood, and a scientific basis is provided for further optimization of urban road planning.
