TL;DR: The dedicated tool NetGame Sniffer is developed for measurement and analysis of network game traffic, and the game traffic models and practical uses of the models are proposed.
Abstract: A number of papers have been proposed for the purpose of analyzing the traffic data of network game and providing the models recently. The traffic characteristics of network games are different according to the game genres, and the traffic is affected by player number and the in-game behaviors. In this paper, we develop the dedicated tool NetGame Sniffer for measurement and analysis of network game traffic, and measure the traffic of Quake and World of Warcraft. We analyze and compare the traffic characteristics according to the number of players and user actions, and propose the game traffic models and practical uses of the models. The analysis and models of network game traffic are can be used for effective network simulation, performance evaluation and the design of network games.

TL;DR: This paper formalizes the problem with an integer program and proposes an efficient approximation algorithm - TSRR, solving the problem quickly while guaranteeing a constant performance ratio, and aims at approaching network-wide energy proportionality by routing optimization.
Abstract: Despite some proposals for energy-efficient topologies, most of the studies for saving energy in data center networks are focused on traffic engineering, i.e., consolidating flows and switching off unnecessary network devices. The major weakness of this approach is network oscillation brought by the frequent change of network topology when traffic fluctuates very fast. In this paper, we propose to incorporate rate adaptation into green data center networks. With rate adaptive network devices, we aim at approaching network-wide energy proportionality by routing optimization. We formalize the problem with an integer program and propose an efficient approximation algorithm - TSRR, solving the problem quickly while guaranteeing a constant performance ratio. Extensive range of simulations confirm that more than 40% of the energy can be saved while introducing very slight stretch on network delay.

TL;DR: A comparison of the results of an oriented multicast protocol simulation performed on some of the major topology models currently in use in the network research community is presented.
Abstract: Simulation is one of the most widely used techniques for designing network protocols. A simulation framework provides a sandbox where a harmful design flaw can easily be detected and removed. This is done prior to implementation and experimentation in an operational environment as it is easier and cheaper to carry out. However, simulation results can be distorted if the simulation model is unrealistic. In particular the topology model used by a protocol simulation can have a great impact on the results. In this paper we present a comparison of the results of an oriented multicast protocol simulation performed on some of the major topology models currently in use in the network research community.

TL;DR: In this article, a method and system for reconstructing a path taken by undesirable network traffic through a computer network from a source of the traffic is provided, which includes collecting statistics at a plurality of measurement points located within forwarding infrastructure of the computer network.
Abstract: A method and system for reconstructing a path taken by undesirable network traffic through a computer network from a source of the traffic is provided. The method includes collecting statistics at a plurality of measurement points located within forwarding infrastructure of the computer network. The method also includes analyzing the statistics to reconstruct the path taken by the undesirable network traffic through the network from the source of the traffic. The method and system use a combination of well-known misuse signatures of network resources in combination with modeling of normal network service behavior to identify bandwidth anomalies.

TL;DR: This paper studies and analyzes the performance of an adaptive traffic-responsive strategy that manages the traffic light parameters (the cycle time and the split time) in an urban network to reduce traffic congestion.
Abstract: Suitable control measures and strategies must be taken to counteract the reduced throughput and the degradation of the network infrastructure caused by traffic congestion in urban networks. This paper studies and analyzes the performance of an adaptive traffic-responsive strategy that manages the traffic light parameters (the cycle time and the split time) in an urban network to reduce traffic congestion. The proposed traffic-responsive strategy adopts a nearly-optimal control formulation: first, an (approximate) solution of the HJB is parametrized via an appropriate Lyapunov positive definite matrix; then, the solution is updated via a procedure that generates candidate control strategies and selects at each iteration the best one based on the estimation of close-to-optimality and the information coming from the simulation model of the network (simulation-based design). Simulation results obtained using an AIMSUN model of the traffic network of Chania, Greece, an urban traffic network containing many varieties of junction staging, demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approach.
