TL;DR: In this article, a 3D hierarchical structure of nickel phosphide (Ni5 P4 ) was used as a bifunctional catalyst for the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction in strong acidic and alkaline environment.
Abstract: The investigation of nickel phosphide (Ni5 P4 ) as a catalyst for the hydrogen (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in strong acidic and alkaline environment is described. The catalyst can be grown in a 3D hierarchical structure directly on a nickel substrate, thus making it an ideal candidate for practical water splitting devices. The activity of the catalyst towards the HER, together with its high stability especially in acidic solution, makes it one of the best non-noble materials described to date. Furthermore, Ni5 P4 was investigated in the OER and showed activity superior to pristine nickel or platinum. The practical relevance of Ni5 P4 as a bifunctional catalyst for the overall water splitting reaction was demonstrated, with 10 mA cm(-2) achieved below 1.7 V.

TL;DR: Experimental and theoretical investigations suggest that the unusual catalytic performance of this catalyst is due to sp-d orbital charge transfer between the Ni dopants and the surrounding carbon atoms.
Abstract: Single-atom nickel dopants anchored to three-dimensional nanoporous graphene can be used as catalysts of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic solutions. In contrast to conventional nickel-based catalysts and graphene, this material shows superior HER catalysis with a low overpotential of approximately 50 mV and a Tafel slope of 45 mV dec(-1) in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution, together with excellent cycling stability. Experimental and theoretical investigations suggest that the unusual catalytic performance of this catalyst is due to sp-d orbital charge transfer between the Ni dopants and the surrounding carbon atoms. The resultant local structure with empty C-Ni hybrid orbitals is catalytically active and electrochemically stable.

TL;DR: In this article, the results of an examination into the adsorption by peat of copper and nickel from both mono and bi-solute systems were presented, and it was shown that pore diffusion appeared to be the rate-controlling step and that the presence of ‘contaminant’ copper ions reduced the binding of nickel.
Abstract: Much of the work on the adsorption of metals by low-cost, natural biosorbents has focussed on the uptake of single metals. In practice, wastewaters are polluted with multiple metals. In addition, the kinetics of adsorption, which are important in the design of treatment systems, have largely been neglected. This paper describes the results of an examination into the adsorption by peat of copper and nickel from both mono and bi-solute systems. These showed that, in general, pore diffusion appeared to be the rate-controlling step and that the presence of ‘contaminant’ copper ions reduced the binding of nickel. In fact, the best interpretation which could be placed on the data was that the behaviour of nickel was unusual. The results also showed that the kinetics of adsorption were best described by a second-order expression rather than a first-order model.
