TL;DR: Graphene/nickel composites were prepared by electrodeposition in a nickel sulfamate solution with graphene oxide (GO) sheets in suspension as discussed by the authors, which showed the thermal conductivity of the composites to be about 15% more than that of pure nickel electrodeposits.

TL;DR: In this paper, the role of alkali in carbon-free CO2 reforming of methane was examined on Ni/Al2O3 catalysts with 0, 1, 5, and 10 wt% K. The number of surface nickel atoms required for the reforming was estimated from a simple Langmuir form, r=r0(1−ΘK)n, to be ca. 2.9.

TL;DR: In this paper, structural and electronic investigations were conducted on lithium nickel oxide-based particles used in positive electrodes of 18650-type high-power Li-ion cells, and they identified a <5 nm thick modified layer on the surface of the oxide particles, which results from the loss of Ni and Li ordering in the layered R{bar 3}m structure.
Abstract: Structural and electronic investigations were conducted on lithium nickel oxide-based particles used in positive electrodes of 18650-type high-power Li-ion cells. K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) revealed trivalent Ni and Co ions in the bulk LiNi{sub 0.8}Co{sub 0.2}O{sub 2} powder used to prepare the high power electrode laminates. Using oxygen K-edge XAS, high resolution electron microscopy, nanoprobe diffraction, and electron energy-loss spectroscopy, we identified a <5 nm thick modified layer on the surface of the oxide particles, which results from the loss of Ni and Li ordering in the layered R{bar 3}m structure. This structural change was accompanied by oxygen loss and a lowering of the Ni- and Co-oxidation states in the surface layer. Growth of this surface layer may contribute to the impedance rise observed during accelerated aging of these Li-ion cells.

TL;DR: A catalyst is described that exhibits turnover frequencies higher than state-of-the-art catalysts that operate in alkaline solutions, including the benchmark nickel iron oxide, and it is stable for many hours.
Abstract: The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a key process that enables the storage of renewable energies in the form of chemical fuels. Here, we describe a catalyst that exhibits turnover frequencies higher than state-of-the-art catalysts that operate in alkaline solutions, including the benchmark nickel iron oxide. This new catalyst is easily prepared from readily available and industrially relevant nickel foam, and it is stable for many hours. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopic data reveal that the catalyst is made of nanoclusters of γ-FeOOH covalently linked to a γ-NiOOH support. According to density functional theory (DFT) computations, this structure may allow a reaction path involving iron as the oxygen evolving center and a nearby terrace O site on the γ-NiOOH support oxide as a hydrogen acceptor.

TL;DR: A spin-polarized first-principles calculation of the atomic and electronic structure of the graphene/Ni(111) interface is presented in this article, where different structural models have been considered, which differ in the positions of the carbon atoms with respect to the nickel topmost layer.
Abstract: A spin-polarized first-principles calculation of the atomic and electronic structure of the graphene/Ni(111) interface is presented. Different structural models have been considered, which differ in the positions of the carbon atoms with respect to the nickel topmost layer. The most probable structure, which has the lowest energy, has been determined. The distance between the floating carbon layer and the nickel surface is found smaller than the distance between graphene sheets in bulk graphite, in accordance with experimental measurements. The electronic structure of the graphene layer is strongly modified by interaction with the substrate and the magnetic moment of the surface nickel atoms is lowered in the presence of the graphene layer. Several interface states have been identified in different parts of the interface two-dimensional Brillouin zone. Their influence on the electron energy loss spectra has been evaluated.
