TL;DR: A sensitive fluorometric procedure for the quantitative determination of damascenine revealed that the alkaloid is metabolically inert and failed to disa pear from the testas during germination and was not formed in the etiolated seedlings.
Abstract: A sensitive fluorometric procedure for the quantitative determination of damascenine was developed. A plication of the method to the viable seeds and to the germinated seedlings and seedcoats of Nigella damascena revealed that the alkaloid is metabolically inert. It failed to disa pear from the testas during germination and was not formed in the etiolated seedlings. Paper partition chromatography was utilized to verify the identity and homogeneity of damascenine.
